In the book "One Skein Wonders", there's a pattern called the "Short and Sassy Shawl." The pattern calls for you to knit the first stitch, then increase in the next stitch (kf&b).

But I wondered, can I slip that first stitch to make a nicer edge? Or because the next stitch is that kf&b increase, do I have to knit that first stitch?

No you could slip it, then still do kfb in the next stitch.

Whenever you wonder if something would look okay if you changed it, practice the modification on some leftover yarn to see how it looks.
