The only times I have seen it mentioned, it was being recommended as a good choice for waste yarn as a stitch holder (mercerized cotton). Apparently it's good because it won't leave tiny little fibres showing up after being removed.
I think mercerization is some kind of treatment process that leaves the cotton smoother. Google could explain better, I bet.

Hi mercerized yarn has undergone a chemical process so that it is 'polished' (or some consider shiny). Washing can however dull that shine. Mercerized yarn is 'smoothed' so that, as redwitch suggests, it does not have lots of little 'hairs'.
