I found this reall cute pattern (http://www.bergeredefrance.fr/document/upload/tricotheque/bloc/193056_janv_270.pdf) on a French knitting site. And I really like it. So I have started translating the pattern using an an article (http://chezplum.com/knitting-from-the-french/) from Chez Plum, but I've reached the Raglan decreases (I'm not even sure they're decreases, actually. :pout: ) and I'm stuck. Can anyone help me out? This is what I've translated so far, as I have chosen to eliminate the flowers since I think they look ugly.

Off the Shoulder Sweater
Supplies
Bali yarn, 7 balls (154 yds. per ball)
Sirene yarn, 4 balls
4mm and 4.5 mm needles (size 6 and 7)

Notes
Work with Sirene and Bali together as 1
Work on 4mm needles for 2x2 ribbing
Work from chart for lace pattern

Gauge
4in= 19 st and 28 rows
Important: Knit with a smaller needle if you obtain less stitches and rows than on this sample. Knit with a larger needle in the contrary case.

Begin
Attention: Each YO must be compensated by 1 skp or 2 right side stitches and conversely.
Back: CO 86 stitches with 4mm needles. Knit for 7 cm (20 rows) in 2x2 rib. Continue knitting with size 4.5 mm needles while starting with 1 right side row stitch instead of 2.
Raglan: When piece measure 31 cm (88 rows) from cast on edge, bind off 2 stitches of each dimension, then reduce with
Then I'm stuck. Can anyone help me? I would be very grateful!

Hi there! I have a lot of trouble following French patterns even though it is my first language  But here's what I got for you...

French:

Raglan : A 31-32-32-33 cm (88-90-90-
94 rgs) de haut. tot., rab. 3 m. de ch.
côté, puis dim. à 3 m. du bord :
T. 1 : 2 fs 1 m. ts les 4 rgs, 10 fs 1 m.
ts les 2 rgs.
T. 2 : 15 fs 1 m. ts les 2 rgs.
T. 3 : 1 fs 1 m. ts les 4 rgs, 16 fs 1 m.
ts les 2 rgs.
T. 4 : 20 fs 1 m. ts les 2 rgs.
Pour dim. 1 m. à 3 m. du bord : à
droite, tric. 3 m. endr., 2 m. ens. endr.,
à gauche lorsqu’il reste 5 m. sur l’aig.
gauche, tric. 1 S.S., 3 m. endr.
Rab. les 56-58-60-62 m. rest. en 1 fs.

English:

At 31 cm (88 rows), bind off 3 stitches on each side, and decrease at 3 stitches from the edge :
T.1: 2 x 1 stitch every 4 rows, 10 x 1 stitch every 2 rows
T.2: 15 x 1 stitch every 2 rows
T.3: 1 x 1 stitch every 4 rows, 16 x 1 stitch every 2 rows
T.4: 20 x 1 stitch every 2 rows

To decrease 1 stitch at 3 stitches from the edge:
To the right: knit 3, k2tog
To the left (when there are 5 stitches left on the left needle) : knit 1, skp, knit 3

Does that help?

That helps me tons, thank you! I never would have figured that out myself. I don't blame you for having trouble following French patterns, they are set up very wierdly. Not that my opinion would matter anyway, I'm an English speaker. :teehee: I'm sure I'm going to be asking for your help again if you don't mind! :muah:

No problem Carmabelle! My pleasure. If you have any other questions just let me know. :muah: I must say I admire your courage! It looks very complicated to me, and it's in my native language. I guess we French speakers are weird... what can we do. :teehee:

Just to piggy-back on this thread- this is the same pattern I was enamoured by after seeing the ChezPlum post as well, and I've also tried to translate it.

I have one question, though, in the part about binding off for the front of the sweater. It seems to say that I should bind of 40 stitches in the center... maybe I'm too much of a newbie knitter to understand how to bind of stitches in the center, or maybe I didn't translate it right.

Here's the french:

Encolure: A 7-8-10-11 cm de haut. de raglan (108-112-118-124 rgs de haut. tot.), rab. les 40-42-44-46 m. centrales, puis de ch. cote ts les 2 rgs 1 fs 7 m. Apres la derniere dim. du raglan, rab. les 4 m. rest. en 1 fs.

Here's my attempt at the translation:

Collar: When the piece measures 7-8-10-11 cm from the beginning of the raglan (108-112-118-124 rows total), bind off 40-42-44-46 sts centered, and then bind of 7 sts at each side once every 2 rows. After the last decrease of the raglan, bind off the last 4 sts.

Does that make sense to anyone else? If so, how do you bind off stitches "centered"?

Thanks!
