Hi all,

I got a link to this tank top pattern from one of the posts. I want to try this for my 2 year old niece. The pattern looks really difficult and I need help in understanding it.

I simplified the pattern using my own words. See below:

Cast on 44 stitches.

Row 1 to 4: Knit

Row 5 to 42:
Odd row: Knit
Even row: Purl

{ After the purl row, do the eyelet row. (This is what it means by ending with the WS, (Wrong Side), isn't it?) }

Row 47: Eyelet row: K2 *Yo K2tog*. Repeat between * until last 2 stitches. K2.

Row 48: Purl
Row 49: Knit
Row 50: Purl

Row 51: Cast off 3 stitches. { Knit or Purl the remaining stitches? }

Row 52: Cast off 3 stitches. { Knit or Purl the remaining stitches? }

Can someone give me a row by row breakup of what I should do next?

Row 51 should be Knit and 52 purl.

Row 43 is the eyelet row and takes the place of the knit row you were doing previously

Then row 44 Purl
Row 45 Knit
Row 46 Purl
Then you begin to cast off as per instructions in the next knit row - Row 47
Row 48 purl and decrease again as per instructions and then keep going after this in stockinette with knit rows and then purl rows.
Row 49 knit
50 - Purl
51 - Knit
52 - Purl

That's my reading of it anyway :-)

Ack..sorry..row 47 "decrease" and not cast off!!

Row 47 is the START of 18 stockinette rows

So 47 decrease in K, row 48 decrease in purl and then you have another sixteen rows of stockinette which takes you to row 64

row 65 you then do this: K 7 (7) (9) stitches and turn.

Row 51: Cast off 3 stitches. { Knit or Purl the remaining stitches? }
Row 52: Cast off 3 stitches. { Knit or Purl the remaining stitches? }

First off, you don't do any decreasing until you get to Row 51. Row 47 (or 43 as the pattern says, because you don't count the 4 rows of garter) is making the eyelets and the decrease stitches along with the YOs make them.

Now, after BO/cast off on rows 51 & 52 (this is for the underarm), it says -
"Beginning with a K row work 18 (20) (22) rows in stocking stitch."

Okay, do that.

"K 7 (7) (9) stitches and turn. Working on these stitches work 10 (11) (12) rows in stocking stitch. Cast off."

You're workning only on those 7 or 9 stitches - it's for the strap. Then you cast off, and attach your yarn back to the body.

"Join yarn to main piece of work and cast off middle stitches leaving 7 (7) (9) stitches. Working on these stitches and beginning with a P row work 11 rows in stocking stitch. Cast off"

Bind off the neck stitches and work on the remaining 7 or 9 sts for the other strap the same as the first. That's it, then you make another piece like it.

Thanks so much both of you. I think I understand now. I didn't realize that one can work on the neck strap and the rest of the sweater separately.
