OK I know this is kinda odd... Am I the only one that picks apart my yarn? I got the idea from when I used to do embroydery.

You make a tight ball.
you pin a length of about 12 inch dangleing off the ball.
Pin it so it doesn't move on the ball at all...

(I use red heart yarn for this)
then, at the end, separate the 4 ply into 2 2ply sections.
Dangle the ball like you would a spendel and pull lightly.
After that length is separated un-pin and re-pin about 12 inches down the yarn.

It takes some time but it makes a great texture yarn for size 2 needles.

I've made socks and hats for my boys and it's non-allergenic unlike a lot of the sock yarns available to me. (I live in a small town with one shop that happens to sell yarn.)

Hope that helped someone.. :passedout:

I did something like that to make little flower motifs for a afghan for my mom. It looks pretty nice, though it was kind of a pain to seperate the strands. I used some Caron Simply Soft and some TLC Heathers; the Simply Soft separated without too much trouble, though the Heathers sort of... disintegrated if I wasn't careful.

I haven't tried it for anything else -- socks sound like a fun idea!
