View Full Version : Help with a yarn substitution, please.

I have a friend that wants to knit up a pattern which calls for Patons Diploma Gold yarn 4-Ply (see here (http://www.stitch1knit1.com/shop/knitting_double_knit_patons_diploma_gold_dk.html) for a description), but it appears that it's not available in this country... at least I've had zero luck finding it anywhere other than the U.K.

It's a DK weight, part wool & part acrylic. All I know about the pattern is that it's for a knitted toy where gauge and fit are not hugely important (she's making it for me so she won't tell me anything else lol).

What yarn would you recommend as a substitution? It's for a baby toy so a broad variety of color choices would probably be good.

Oh! And she is no where the yarn snob ;) that I am so she will probably want something easily found at Michaels or Joann's.

Plymouth Encore DK? I also thought of Lionbrand Woolease, but I don't know if that comes in DK.

(Smiley's (http://www.pagelinx.com/cgi-shopper/search.cgi/smileysyarns/ezshopper?user_id=21463-20070407&1_option=3&1=plymouth&database=dbase1.exm&template=template1.htm&output_number=100) has the Encore for really cheap.)

I was going to recommend Encore DK, too.
