i have this vintage purse, and am trying to determine the pattern used. i'm not sure if it's macrame, loom knitting, or some other method other than knit or crochet. any help would be greatly appreciated!

It doesn't look like knitting or crochet to me. It looks more like it's woven somehow.

I agree. It looks like it's woven with a thin black yarn/string and a thick and thin varying red yarn.
