Oh, you will love it! Wear good walking shoes. If you like Fiesta Ware there is a big store next to the grounds and in the back they have seconds at really great discounts.

Quick question...perhaps it's already answered in a post earlier, but I'm too lazy to read back through them...

What gauge are we using? I'm starting to keep my eye open for yarn, and I was just wondering...

Is it pretty much wool yarn?

Thanks!

Pretty sure its washable worsted weight. The possibilities!

That's exactly right!

Washable Worsted Weight yarn.
We should call it the "WWW" blanket. :teehee:

Ha! :roflhard:

I think we should add WONDERFUL so it will have even MORE W's!

Plus, since we're all on the World Wide Web, that adds 3 additional W's.

This thing is never gonna end. :teehee:

Maybe we should donate it to a charity in Washington. :)

Just wanted to let you know I hand delievered the blanket to my mom (jbird05) in Canton, Texas today!

So we know it isn't lost in the mail somewhere :)

It'll be making it's way to it's temporary home in San Antonio tomorrow! She said she's take a picture when she is done so we can watch the progress!

However:woot:by the time it arrives, it will be nearly complete and my legs will be warm and toasty while I work my wee stretch!

Well, remclave, after looking at the list, I think you'll probably get the blanket in June of 2008. (I'm serious!)

Remember - each knitter gets 2 weeks with the blanket, and there are 17 knitters still ahead of you.

I wish it could be quicker!

:cheering: Yay! I got the blanket by personal delivery! Can't wait to get started on it! I was going to use a shade of red but that won't really work next to the last color and there is already a red in the blanket - so drats :teehee:- I have to go yarn shopping on the way home from work tonight!

Secksiebrat - Your mom is so sweet! That was really nice of her to bring it to me. I enjoyed meeting her very much. I love the yarns you both used. I'm going to look for a blueish green, I think. Or maybe a greenish blue.

She found out about some knitting thing going on in town this weekend? You may get a call from her. She's excited about it and I can't make it down this weekend to go with her! So if she calls you, she doesn't want you to think she's stalking you! LOL! She just wants a knitting friend! :roflhard:

Oi! What a day! Sorry it has taken this long to post pics! Here is the blanket as I am shipping it off in a few minutes! I decided to pickup a blue shade in the varigated yarn that Secksiebrat used. It is a stitch pattern that creates a row of hearts. Hope you can see them in there. jbird05 (AKA Secksiebrat's mom) did a wide rib pattern in a harvest gold color that is also in the varigated. BTW, the blanket is now 19 inches long!

Welcome to the group, Roseybee!

Glad you are getting better, GJ!

This isn't the whole blanket; it is a bit too big for me to photograph indoors and all of central Arkansas is muddy right now.

When I opened up the blanket, I immediately thought of a fall day. My favorite part of a fall day is the sun rays. (The beams streaming through the trees. And if you go for a walk you can feel little warm spots as you walk though them! I love em!) So I wanted something that kind of reminded me of sun rays, but was also easy enough that I could knit it while watching tv.

What a neat source of inspiration! I think I've found a pattern. I'll be hunting for yarn either today (if the rain lets up) or tomorrow.

I feel so privileged to be working on this project. This is one of the main reasons why I wanted to learn to knit...to make something useful. I know this blanket is going to be treasured by the recipient.

It was a very stressful day at work today; however, the worries melted away when I pulled into my driveway and saw a big box by my front door. Boy, I could not get in the house fast enough!

My excitement grew as I carefully slit the well-taped flaps.

And lo and behold...Christmas in October! Lookie, lookie...

You know, I wasn't sure if the stitch book was for me. I wasn't sure if it was traveling with the blanket or if you left it in accidentally. I poured through these posts trying to figure it out. :teehee:

Well, I knit for several hours last night before realizing that the pattern is turning out on the wrong side!!! I only managed to knit an inch thus far, but there is no way I'm frogging, so I figure I'll reverse the pattern for an inch and then reverse it again for the last inch. I remember theat when I read the pattern (a simple one), it said that it looked good on both sides. Uh, yeah, right! :teehee: It will certainly give weight to its name..."Oddball."

I'm not so sure that you didn't. I think it may have been my fault. I may not have accounted for the "cast on" row in the pattern, which is actually for a dishcloth. I just happened to like the stitch, and it worked with the stitch count on our needles. So, call me the New Knitter on this one!
But it's really okay. I brought the blanket to work this morning, and I was explaining my plan, and everyone thought it sounded good. Everyone is raving over the blanket too!!!

I think a LOT of us are new knitters! This isn't the first time the cast on or bind off has been reversed on an Oddball Blanket. No big deal. I already have a plan brewing in my mind to fix those spots with yarn embroidery. :)

Hi y'all! I just wanted to check in and let you know that I've done about 2". I'm hoping to finish by tomorrow and get it in the mail by Tuesday, at the latest. I've been working on it feverishly so that I can resume my class assignments. Nothing like some deadlines to keep you motivated, eh?

I'll post pictures when before I box it up.

I'm done, I'm done!!! :cheering:

I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease. The color is Dark Rose Heather. It looks a little pinkish-purple in some lights and some pictures, but it's more of a mauve-type color.

I used the stitch pattern from a dishcloth pattern called Bamboo Cloth Variation 1. The pattern can be found here (http://www.jimsyldesign.com/%7Edishbout/kpatterns/bamboo1.html).

The blanket currently measures right at 24". It is very impressive...the pictures just do not do it justice.

I'm posting a few pictures. It's hard to get the angle and lighting just right. My stitch pattern doesn't show up very well in my pictures, but if you look at the link above, you'll see what it looks like.

I used in Lamb's Pride Superwsh in Blueberry Sorbet. I love the color, but this yarn seems much finer than a worsted weight, although the web site lists it as worsted. I'm not really happy with my section.

Well, I've started on my part of the blanket. I have a really nice forest green color that looks great up against the lighter blue that losnana used. I started out trying a new stitch pattern but after 4 rows I kept getting holes (don't know what I was doing wrong) so in the interest of finishing on time, I frogged it and am now doing a simple garter stitch! I still think it will look nice next to some of the other really neat patterns you guys have done. :)

Umm ... would it be wrong to use 2 different colors on my section? The pattern is coming along well - about 2 repeats and maybe an inch, inch and half ... but I only had one skein of KP swish in burgundy. I guess I didn't give much thought to it not being enough, but I used every last bit! I have plenty of other things I can use with it, but I'm not sure how we all feel about the two color thing? I also have wool-ease I can use if you all think I should start over? Help! Guidance! Direction!

I'll post pics in a bit. We had a bit of a flood here this week, (clogged toilet combined with a flapper that wouldn't close, so we had 60-80 some odd gallons of water dumped into our bath, bedroom, and basement - very frustrating!) so I've been busy with that, and the camera is charging at the moment. Luckily, none of my yarn was damaged - that would have been one ugly site!:teehee:

My love affair with the post office is officially over. I went to the post office yesterday at 8 but they didn't open until 8:30. I was too busy at lunch to make another trip. So this morning I was there right at 8:30 and had to wait 15 minutes for them to open because they were running late.

I'll be using UPS primarily from now on - they run their shipping like a real business with defined hours. Maybe it's just my local post office but I'm very frustrated after this week. I hope everything gets there safely.

My husband asked where it was going and he said that we could have hand delivered it to Roseybee this weekend and saved the hassle. My folks live very close to that area!

Hi Anne! Welcome to the forum!

We are full of knitters for this blanket, but I can put you on the "pinch knitters" list. We use our pinch knitters to cover for those that cannot knit their portion of our blankets. Also, all pinch knitters are immediately added to any new blankets that get started.

Right now, we have 5 pinch knitters, so I'll be starting another lapghan very soon!

If you want to join the pinch knitters list, just send me a private message (click my photo on the left, then scroll down the page and click "send a private message to Shandeh").

Thanks for asking!

I don't know why it didn't occur to me until today to post updates on the oddball blanket here. I haven't been spending much time on KH lately, just been very busy. Plus I'm sure you are all familiar with how KH can suck you in so before you know it you've spent half the morning here, instead of doing dishes or folding laundry or, more importantly, knitting!
During the two weeks I had the blanket, I showed it to many of my husband's family members. His grandmother has been knitting mittens for 45 years, but doesn't knit anything else and has never read a pattern. The blanket also went to a local middle school, where my husband's aunt is teaching kids how to knit. She got a $3000 state grant for a knitting class, to spend on yarn and needles, but what the kids get out of it is priceless. Even just the one-on-one time with an adult is beneficial, and the kids have really taken to the knitting. The blanket was a wonderful inspiration to them and they loved reading about where it's been and seeing all sorts of patterns and color choices.
I'm posting a picture of myself holding up the blanket (I was too busy knitting to comb my hair that day, so excuse my appearance!) and a close-up of my section. I used Vanna's Choice in Honey and did a quatrefoil eyelet pattern. For some reason the left hand eyelets didn't show up much in the picture, but they really form a diamond shape. I'd always wanted to try Vanna's yarn. It handled sort of like Red Heart, but softer, I think.

Believe me, it does get hot even when it is cold working on it. You learn to position it so it is not all on your lap. I am always hot anyway so was knitting sitting on my knees most of the time with the blanket laying out in front of me on the futon. Have fun working on it when it is your turn. It is so fun to see the work of all of the other knitter's and their choice of stitch patterns. I was glad is wasn't 80 degree weather during my turn.

You are very welcome! Great job on the blanket. You had quite a lot of knitting to do with 2 blankets at one time. It is getting very close to being done. It is SO beautiful. I was honored to be able to work on it.

Yes, you guessed it! We are all using washable worsted weight yarn from our stash, and using a stitch design of our choice. It's fun to see how it turns out, isn't it? :)

The blanket is beautiful  Thank you so much Panda for the yummy Debbie Bliss yarn, tea and teabag dish :) I love tea and coffee, but my doctor has pretty much ordered coffee out of my life so the tea is just what the doctor ordered . . . literally

I have all the yarn options from my stash that I think may go with the blanket out and next to the blanket and am currently gleaning opinions from my sister, DS and BF. My BF doesn't come over until later so I'll start when he gets to put his 2 cents worth in as well :)

The blanket arrived safely at my house today!

Thanks Evona for the goodies! How did you know I needed some Burt's Bees? (there was an unfortunate accident with my lip balm and the dryer, need I say more?)

The blanket is BEAUTIFUL! and GINORMOUS!!! Can't wait for the ladies at knitting to see this!

Hope you all have a nice holiday weekend! I am off to check my stash and pattern books!

Sorry for the delay! I got 4 blankets at once so I was trying to get the quickest ones out the door first.
Tomorrow is WWKIP Day and I will take it to my group for them to see as well. I will be ready to send out by Monday. Who's up next?

Shandeh

According to my records, Cynamar is next, and she told me she was ready a couple weeks ago.

I'll send her address to you. :)

Cynamar- I finally got the package off to you. YOu should see it in 2-3 days- tracking ## is 0307 3330 0001 4857 4318.
I had wanted to get to the post office earlier this week, but we had a new employee start and I have to train her in. I couldn't run out at lunch as it was the only time I had to get my own work done!

This gorgeous blanket was waiting for me next to the door when I got home from work last night. I will choose yarn and a stitch pattern this evening and get started. I think it might be a good thing to work on at Wednesday Knit Night. Here are the goodies that Tracie stuck in the box. I didn't try the tea last night but it smells GOOD!!! I think I will make a pot of it when I get home. This is the cheeriest, sunniest yarn in my stash.

Hi braymer! This particular blanket is full of knitters. We are starting a new blanket right now that will be donated to an orphanage in Mexico. It's called the "Oddball Orphan Blanket". You can join that one if you want.

What places are the "worthy charities" not doubting the worthiness.... Just wondering!

How many stitches wide are the blankets?

Shandeh
07-09-2008, 11:48 PM
Hi tropicflower. Our blankets are usually given to orphanages, since they each need a blanket on their bed.

GAIN (Global Aid Network) distributes blankets to orphanages all over the world.

I have also found an orphanage in Mexico that's accepting blankets. :)

The fullsize blankets were started with 300 stitches cast on. The smaller lapghans are made with 200 stitches.
