howdy, knitters...

i found an afghan pattern that i particularly like, but i thought i'd ask some advice before starting it.

1) the pattern says to use bernat satin sport. for anyone who's used it, what is your general opinion of this yarn? i'm a sucker for wool myself, so don't have much experience with acrylic. any thoughts you had would be appreciated.

2) the pattern then says CO 281 st. k 8 rows, inc 10 st evenly across last row. how do i do this?

3) the pattern is not too hard to read until it calls for "yfwd". is this the same as a yo?

as always, your collective wisdom is always appreciated.

Generally a yfwd is the same as a yo; when you move the yarn to the front, then knit the next stitch -- it's a YO. To increase 10 sts evenly across the row, you would put an inc about every 25 sts or so; work 25, inc, work 25, inc, work 25, etc.... Bernat satin is a soft acrylic, and it's machine washable. Do you want to hand wash a wool afghan?

I have a book marked site "yarn substitution calculator " that you can figure incr and decr on. enter the number of sts, then the number to incr or decr and it will tell you how often to do them. this seems to work better than when I try to figure it myself!!

You could substitute a superwash yarn for the acrylic. Personally, I've had better luck with superwash wools holding up in the washing machine/dryer than acrylics.

I was going to search for the answer to the same question about evenly increasing stitches across a row (I have a baby blanket pattern that says "Work 9 rows in garter st and inc 10 sts evenly across last row. 120 sts."). Here it was! I didn't have to do much searching at all.

Now I just have to figure out the M1 method of increasing (all I've done so far are the kfb and the invisible increase methods).

And I've bookmarked that link to the increase/decrease calculator.

There is video on this site that shows you how to M1. It's under "Increases" in the Basic Techniques tab. Good luck.

i think i'm gonna start the afghan i'm thinking about just as soon as i scrape a little cash together.
