I really, really want to make this this summer, but I can't find the yarn. Since I am a novice, I don't want to spend money on a substitute only to find out that it doesn't work. Does anyone have an idea which yarn I could use instead?

According to the pattern:

Yarn substitutes :
Phil Ruban is a flat woven cotton tape 3-4mm wide. You could use Patons Bella which is slightly wider with more stretch.

So you want to look for a woven cotton tape or maybe ribbon yarn first of all.

Then the gauge according to the pattern:
Gauge :
19 sts by 24 rows measured over 10cm (4 inches) in pattern stitch

It looks like the yarn specified is worsted. You might try looking at Yarndex (http://www.yarndex.com/home.cfm) and see if you can find something. you can do a search to get it to narrow down.
