KH Headquarters is pleased to release our newest forum feature: The ability to embed Google and YouTube videos into your posts.

Here are instructions on how to embed Google and YouTube videos into your posts at KnittingHelp.com. Within the posting editor you will notice two new icons (see attachment), one for YouTube and one for Google. Clicking them will insert in the necessary BBCODE.

Next, you will need to reference the video by editing the BBCODE. There are many ways to do this:

Simple Method:
You will need to get he unique ID code for the video. This can
usually be found at the end of the URL. For YouTube it is after the
watch?v= and for Google it is after docid=. Simply copy and paste
that code between the video tag...

M6ZjMWLqJvM
3302493280465168044

Another Simple Method:
This just involves copy and pasting the full URL to the video
between the tags:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=M6ZjMWLqJvM
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3302493280465168044

Title Method:
And finally, if you want to include a title that will appear at the
top of the embedded player you can use a format like this:

The Last Knit

OR

The Last Knit
Enjoy the new feature and feel free to use this thread as a testing ground for your new powers!

- Sheldon

When you embed a video it should look like this and play right within the forum post:

Doesn't that suck up a bunch of bandwidth?!!!:thud:

Doesn't that suck up a bunch of bandwidth?!!!:thud:

These are embed videos so they are hosted by Google and YouTube. So we don't incur any bandwidth hits for them. This is all well and good with Google and YouTube. In fact, they encourage it as part of their viral promotion efforts.

Our own local KH videos...well that's another matter altogether and we certainly wouldn't be able to do this if we had to host them (thanks GOOGLE!). We were pushing 3,500GB (yes GIGABYTES!) of bandwidth per month during our busy season. Every winter we have to add a new server to handle the bandwidth load and all the new people who discover KH. We're up to 3 currently, although right now I think we're back down to just one. Come August we'll have to start up the others again and by the holiday season we may need to get a forth online!

Awesome! We we hoping that this feature would spur people to post their own instructional videos a la Amy! We're always trying to make KH a better learning/teaching place.

Of course, unrelated funny videos are fine as well! I love that mother's day movie. Their stuff is quite hilarious, but that MD vid takes the cake!

Make sure you have a recent version of Flash installed. You can painlessly install it here:

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Both YouTube and Google Video rely on Flash 8 or greater, I believe. Also, make sure you don't have any advert blocker or other thing running that might be blocking embedded Flash videos from 3rd party sites from displaying.

I guess I'm confused about whether it is legal for us to use other peoples videos ?

YouTube policies permits any video submitted to YouTube to be displayed on YouTube and linked/embedded into other sites. People can set their videos to private to prevent them from being displayed on other web sites. But the standard operating procedure for YouTube and Google is to make the information available for others to share. It's a great model in my opinion!

Cool videos. One great thing about this is if I have another question about my project, I can show which video I'm referring to. Speaking of the project, I'm taking a break from the Heart Pad for a while as I'm currently working on something for Warm Up America. :knitting::figureditout:
