I don't know how young or old a child you want the pattern for but Interweave knits has a baby pattern that sizes up to at least 2 years, maybe 3. I think it is called "heirloom aran" or something like that. It is in an older issue. If my memory serves me right, I think you can search back issues at their site and find it that way.

Classic Elite has a free pattern for a "Child's Cable Rib Pullover," http://www.classiceliteyarns.com/pdf/STChildsCableRibPO.pdf , its sizes range from a child's size 2 to 8. Another pattern can be found at Yarn Lover's Room; "Child's Fisherman Pattern," http://www.knitting-crochet.com/chifispat.html sizes range for this sweater from a child's sm (4-6) to lg (12-14). I haven't made a sweater from either pattern, so I can not say if they are easy to make or not. But I hope the web pages help you in your search.
