Well, I guess this is as good a time as any to talk about SAFF.
The Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair, which takes place in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.
http://www.saffsite.org/index.php

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/31/54945269_48cc515526.jpg

SAFF 2007 takes place on
Friday, October 26th, 9am to 6pm;
Saturday, October 27th 9am to 6pm; and
Sunday, October 28th, 9am to 4pm.

Admission is free on Friday.
On Saturday & Sunday the fee will be $2/person for 13 yrs. & older (no charge for 12 yrs. and under).
Tickets purchased on Saturday may be reused on Sunday.

They offer free Child Care (for toddlers & older) on Saturday & Sunday in Kids' Alley

I go every year, and always have a BLAST!
There are lots of yarn vendors, spinning displays, fiber animals, and cool classes.

Two years ago, I took "Beginning Knitting", and learned some things I didn't already know.

Last year, I took "Beginning Spinning", and learned how to make better yarn. (see me there on the back row?) :)

It always falls on hubby's birthday (the 27th). Last year was his 35th so we had a party and I couldn't go to SAFF. This year, I'm going to beg, whine, moan, whimper until he says I can go. And I am not above a temper tantrum If needed!

SAFF is sooooooooooo much fun! Its always in Ashville, NC. Its such a great place to visit though. You might be able to talk the hubby into going if he knows there is lots of stuff for him as well. Not only at SAFF, but in Asheville.

http://www.exploreasheville.com/index.aspx

Bars, Hookah bars, Cereal Bars, Music, funky shops, great eateries... entertainment and much much more.

My fav.... places in downtown Asheville
Chocolate Fetish
Earth Guild
Just being out on the street
Eaties Cereal Bar... Its just to funky not to make the list
Hannah Flannagan's Irish Pub
Jack of the Wood (Greenman pub)
Hookah Joes

Just outside downtown
Biltmore House

Shandeh, I would totally love to meet up with you and do SAFF together! Well with everyone!! A KH SAFF get-together, anyone?

I'm going to do what I can to make sure I go, but don't hold your breath, ok? It's a long drive and I don't like driving long distances myself, and I don't have any knitting buddies near by, so I have to convince hubby to take me. I don't know how thrilled he'll be about that. lol If not hubby, MAYBE my mom will go with me...
(I feel like such a kid. LOL)

I will be there. Maybe we should start researching hotels in the area to help any long distance khers out? i know i won't want to drive up and back everyday. it is about an hour and a half for me.

Cool! Let's make it a get-together then!

All we need to do is decide where we want to stay. Asheville should be gorgeous that time of year, with beautiful fall leaves, so we'd better reserve rooms NOW, before they fill up!

Here is the main website for the Western NC AG Center.
http://www.ncagr.com/markets/facilit/agcenter/western/index.htm

Their address is posted on that site, for looking up driving directions. (1301 Fanning Bridge Rd, Fletcher, NC)

Here is the Google Map I looked up for that address.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1301+Fanning+Bridge+Rd,+Fletcher,+NC&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=29.578161,59.238281&ie=UTF8&ll=35.438995,-82.520199&spn=0.0593,0.1157&z=13&om=1

Fletcher is the place we might want to look for accomodations, just to make travel easy. There is a small airport nearby - I'm not sure if it lands big planes. (Asheville Regional Airport) If anyone flies in, they could probably take a small plane to that spot.

Here is a map I just detailed that shows the place where SAFF is held:

If you have lots of bucks, and want a VERY NICE room, this place looks FANCY-SCHMANCY!!! http://www.chateauonthemountain.com/

If you want to make it a get-away with your SO, this place fits the bill. http://www.bbonline.com/nc/tudorhouse/index.html

Here are some more B&B's for that area:
http://www.bbonline.com/nc/fletcher.html

If you want to bring your dog(s), here's a place you can stay together: http://www.barkwells.com/

Budget-minded folks (like me) will want to stay at the Days Inn (http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=06128&brandInfo=DI) or Econo Lodge (http://www.trails.com/all-hotels/hotel-info.asp?hotelid=12395) or Hampton Inn (http://www.hamptoninn.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=AVLAPHX) or Holiday Inn (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hotel/avlap;jsessionid=OOPT0LPADZGF0CTGWAISJBQKM0YBEIY4? _requestid=215940)

Classes cost $10 per hour. So if your class is 2 hours, it's $20. If it's 1.5 hours, it's $15. Sometimes, there is an additional fee for materials.

Here's the workshop listing:

I will certainly be there. My family and I divide our time between Cullowhee NC, primarily, and Asheville, secondarily. We are house-hunting in Asheville right now. By October we should be reasonably settled in to something quasi-permanent.

I'm sort of new to the forum....what exactly would constitute a KH get-together during this event?

Shandeh
06-29-2007, 05:39 PM
Welcome, MrsDavis3!

I'm not sure what our get-together will involve, but I'm sure we'll think of something cool, with all us fun KHers involved in the planning!

I'm just looking forward to seeing everyone, and sitting and knitting together! Maybe we can find a big room at a hotel where we can congregate!

Very tempting! I have a sister who lives in Fletcher so may be a good excuse to visit  Just a little concerned that I am new enough to knitting that LYSs still overwhelm and confuse me right now - can't imagine dealing with everything there! Might enjoy it more if I waited until next year ? I'll have to think about this one...

In terms of accomodations, there are some hotels near the airport, which is pretty much across the street from the ag center (well, they're sort of catty-corner). If you can't find something in Fletcher, Arden or Asheville, Hendersonville is only about a 20 minute drive to the south. There are a number of hotels near the interstate there. You'd just hop on the highway and go up a couple of exits. Turn right, go through the lights, and just past the airport & you're there! If you want more info on that, just ask!

FYI, the airport isn't too bad. We've had issues with US Air flying from Charlotte to Asheville. (Once, we actually picked up a rental car in Charlotte & drove to Asheville & *still* got there before the plane!) Don't know about the other airlines. This is the airport's website: http://www.flyavl.com/

I'm so excited!!! A KH get-together practically in my backyard!! :cheering::happydance:

When I went to Texas in May, I went through the Asheville airport. I flew Delta, and it was great. My flight actually left early, and I had no trouble at all. I loved how small it is too.

Happy to help chrislt8.:teehee:

chris,
I would say that anyone with five works in progress is certainly not too much of a beginner to enjoy a fiber arts event.

chris,
I would say that anyone with five works in progress is certainly not too much of a beginner to enjoy a fiber arts event.

LOL - yeah, lots on the needles but I have only completed one project - a "baby gift set" (sweater, hat, bootsies, woobie) - actually as a gift for a baby shower tomorrow!. Almost done with the first sweater though ...I picked up knitting in April and just can't seem to get enough of learning new techniques, etc

Actually - I feel pretty confident with the knitting - but I still get overwhelmed and confused with the yarn choices - just so many options and variations! Haven't reached the point yet where I can see a skein of yarn and imagine its qualities knit up.:?

Looked at the class schedule and some of them look really interesting (especially the seaming one - I need some help with finishing techniques!)

I will seriously think about this...Thanks for the "support" all

I am keeping my fingers that I can go, hubby is working on his master's and I am not sure if I will be able to get away! Now my son lives in Spartenburg SC maybe I can go see them and then we can go to fhe fiber fair! The baby would love the animals, my DL I don't know about! But I don't know if I would be able to take any of the spinning classes then! Decisions.

I mailed off my form and payment to take The Oops Workshop (http://www.saffsite.org/index.php?page=workshops_workshopsclasses.htm#oops )
Here's the class description:
Come and make mistakes on purpose and learn to correct them. We will be working with swatches as we tink, frog and ladder stitches into their correct positions. A fun class that keeps your knitting flowing! You will leave the class with more confidence in your knitting ability because you can fix your mistakes!

I NEED help with fixing mistakes, because I usually just rip back to repair them.

I was going to register for "Fair Isle Knitting", but I don't have enough money right now. I'll try to do that this week. That class usually fills up VERY quickly, so I doubt I'll be able to get in. :-?

It doesn't hurt to try, though.

You can see all the classes here:
http://www.saffsite.org/index.php?page=workshops_workshopsclasses.htm

The classes cost $10 an hour, so if your class is 2.5 hours, it will cost $25.

The Oops class I'm taking is just $15. Some classes are about 5 or 6 hours long, so they cost more.

:pout: Oh well....I guess we'll let you miss this time, but we won't like it much. :verysad:

oh snap. i just made the mistake of scrolling down the list of vendors.
that job better hurry up and get here. :roflhard:
Ooooo YEAH....Brooks Farm :inlove: and Yarns Forever
There are LOTS of amazing choices for yarn. :)

I like to buy handmade soap there too, because my face reacts to commercial cleansers. I like the oatmeal and goat milk soap.

Well, I thought about coming, but it just isn't going to work out this year...BUT I am already making plans for next year:roflhard:

An unrelated question for all you Asheville bound (or more for those of you who live nearby) - I have a sister who lives in Fletcher (recently retired to there) and I would like to make her a Christmas gift...she walks outside every day...does the weather get cold enough for a hat/scarf down there? I'm just not sure and want to knit her something she'll USE rather than just appreciate! TIA (and hope you don't mind me hijacking the thread just a little bit). :eyebrow:

A hat and scarf will DEFINITELY be used in that area. The mountains get COLD in the winter! (It gets cold in my area too sometimes, but not that often.)

my family went to the biltmore estate in december of '88. in all the pictures, it looks more like fall, but we're all wearing our winter coats. it was definitely cold. i think a hat and scarf would be perfect, especially for someone who lives in the mountains.

chrislt8, as one who lives in that area, the answer would be YES. (Last winter wasn't too bad, except we had a hard freeze in APRIL.) And if she's up on a mountain at all, then definitely yes.

Thanks everyone for your replies - being a Northerner I just think of the Carolina's as WARM...but thought being at the base of the mountains thought that it might just be cold enough for long enough to make the scarf/hat a usable gift! Will have to pick some yarn and get started knitting!

I've got ties to the Asheville area, my future in-laws live there, I'm going to meet them in a month, my first visit there!

BUT - unfortunately I'll be buried deep in graduate school in October, so this would be way NOT a good idea! :fingerwag: Need to keep my head concentrating on school...

shandeh~ are all the classes closed now?

I don't think so. I still see lots of openings on the website for the workshops. http://www.saffsite.org/index.php?page=workshops_workshopsclasses.htm

Some of the workshops are getting full though. It happens every year. That's why I signed up early this time!

Right now the following classes are full:
Fair Isle Knitting
Large Project Basket
Nuno Felting Explorations: The Basics
Socks Easy Up

Spinning: The Next Steps is full in the morning, but they've added another class on Saturday afternoon.

Beginning Spinning has only 2 spots left.

Needle-Felt a Little Nisse has only 3 spots left.

The "Oops" Workshop has only 4 spots left in the morning class.

But, even if you can't take a class, you'll enjoy the fair. So much yarn and so much fiber, and so many cute fiber animals! :inlove:

Both years, I didn't have enough time to see everything. I just wished there were 6 of me, so I could send myselves all over the place! :teehee:

I feel your pain, my friend. I missed the Fair Isle class for TWO YEARS IN A ROW! It filled up both years before I tried to sign up in August or September.

So, THIS year I was SMART! :)
I sent my application in JUNE!

That's the reason I posted about SAFF in the forum so early this year. I wanted you all to have time to get signed up in the classes you wanted. But, I couldn't FORCE you all to sign up. (Even though I really WANTED to!) :teehee:

Carolina Red & others

I'll be at SAFF all 3 days. Not staying over night as I live close by.

I've just signed up for the spinning classes. Waiting on confirmations. Spinning next steps (Sat afternoon) & spinning long & short of it.

If you're taking the classes give a shout out. Otherwise, I'll meet everyone another time.

I plan on being there shopping all day Friday. I'll be the one with a name tag of some sort "KHer Liliyarn" and arms full of fiber. I'm sure I'll be parked in Miss Babs', Tail Spinner's, Yarns Forever's (She's dying her own yarn now!) or Susan's booth. Those are my major hot spots.

MrsJSD
08-07-2007, 10:36 AM
The sock class I want on Friday 10/26 is full BUT
you can email blalock@ioa.com
and ask to be put on the waiting list.
If you think you might like this sock class, please email her and ask to be put on the list. If enough people do this, maybe they will give another class.

I'm finding it very difficult to adhere to my resolution regarding SAFF, i.e. to finish several UFOs before that date and to avoid buying any yarn until then, so I can splurge! In fact it will be impossible the weekend before, when I am going to Atlanta and attending a workshop with Iris Schrier at the shop "Knitch". I have a store credit there, and I just don't foresee myself ignoring it.

MrsJSD, if you only use your store credit, it's not like you're actually spending any money. the money's already spent, it's just delayed gratification. i say go for it!

:woohoo: I signed up for 2 spinning classes as well. 2pm Sat. and the long and short on Sun. I sooooooooooo can't wait! I won't be staying either as I live pretty close as well. Maybe we can car pool since we are takeing the same class. I however will not be able to make it on Fri. :waah: I have to work.
btw... great idea on the name tage!

Shandeh
08-08-2007, 10:31 PM
I'll be there all day Saturday for sure. Class in the morning, and class in the afternoon. I'll have 3 hours in between to scour the yarn and fiber displays for deals. I'll probably take a bag lunch that day so I have time to buy as much yarn as possible. :teehee:

Hopefully, I'll be going in on Friday as well, and spending the night. Maybe we could plan dinner on Friday night, and breakfast on Saturday morning, so we could all meet.

Here are the restaurants that are near SAFF:
J & S Cafeteria
Circle B Ranch Barbeque
Ruby Tuesday
Carrabba's
Cracker Barrel
IHOP
Acropolis Pizza
There is also a McDonald's, Subway, Starbucks, Arby's, and Sonic.

If it were up to me, I would choose Cracker Barrel for dinner on Friday, and IHOP for breakfast on Saturday.

(I actually want Carrabba's for dinner, but would rather spend my money on yarn.)

lissalue
08-09-2007, 08:51 AM
It is absolutely unfair to post that there is a Carabba's near there, but then to bring up the food vs. yarn debate! :tap:

Not fair!! :pout:

Shandeh
08-16-2007, 02:20 AM
I have the same problem! I want food, but I want yarn!

Decisions, decisions. :???:

I'm thinking we could meet for breakfast on Saturday at IHOP at 8:00 AM. SAFF starts at 9:00, so that would give us time to eat and chat a little while.

And I really love IHOP's pancakes.:heart::heart:

But, we could do McDonald's for breakfast, because it's faster, and would leave more money for yarn! :teehee:

misha rf
08-18-2007, 10:34 PM
I have to say, it's a really nice IHOP! We eat there about once a week, and then I make my husband take me to Target (and PetSmart, and sometimes, if I feel like torturing him, Michaels). The McDonalds can get really busy, and the parking lot is a total PITA to get in & out of, b/c of the drive-thru. But, it's a 24hr drive-thru...

Shandeh
08-19-2007, 12:31 AM
Well, Misha...you made that an easy decision for us!

IHOP's it is!

Do you think we'll have enough time if we start breakfast at 8:00?

misha rf
08-19-2007, 08:25 AM
I've never been in there that early, so I'm not sure how busy they are. But I've been in there when it's been fairly busy at dinner, and they do turn orders over fairly quickly. And it's only maybe a 5 min. drive (with traffic) from there to the Ag Center. Oh--they're also used to seeing someone sitting in there, knitting....

Shandeh
08-19-2007, 05:01 PM
Cool! :happydance:

I think a nice breakfast at IHOP will be a PERFECT way to start the day for the fiber fair!
:sun:

I'm getting REALLY excited. It gets closer and closer every day!

As you all know, I'm taking two classes that Saturday, so the only time I'll have available for browsing and buying yarn will be in the middle of the day. So, I'm taking a bag lunch.

I haven't decided for sure if I'm going on Friday or not. It depends on our budget, and my schedule at home. So, I may or may not be staying overnight on Friday. Time will tell.

I'm not sure what my transportation situation is for SAFF. I'm sure I'll be car pooling with some friends and family. I think I can swing a dinner or breakfast though.

Also, I got the confirmation for my classes. I'll be taking Spinning next steps Sat 2-6 and Spinning the long & short of it Sun 9-1. I'll be there shopping all day Friday, Sat morning, and maybe Sun afternoon.

Am I the only one who has already started a shopping list? It's less than 74 days away...

i have some really great news, some not so great news, and some more great news.

the really great - I HAVE A JOB!!!! here's my unintentionally long post (http://knittinghelp.com/knitting/forum/showpost.php?p=953901&postcount=99) with the details.

the not so - i've decided that it would be best for my wallet (when i say wallet, i mean bills ) if i don't go to SAFF this year. i'll be going to the highland games in red springs the first weekend of october right after i get paid. i haven't been in a few years, and i've really missed it. i just really connect with all that stuff. ya gotta love yer history!!! :cheering:
the great - now i can start saving for next year! :woot:

the more great - i've decided to start dying. everybody's gotta go sometime, right? :teehee: there are some christmas presents i want to dye. hand knitting a gift is special, but dying the yarn yourself before you knit it makes it even more special. i've even got my practice yarn and kool-aid ready to go. :happydance: now i just need some time alone without my mom in the house and other "must-do"s hanging over my head. :teehee:

Hmmm...well I figure we'll all want to wander around together like a herd of sheep, looking at yarn! :teehee:

We can look into getting a place to meet if you guys want, though. Just say the word.

I'm starting to think that I will only be there that Saturday. I don't think I want to stay overnight.

So, I'm willing to have breakfast with everyone Saturday morning at 8 AM at IHOP, then dinner somewhere together that evening at 6 PM.

Does that appeal to anyone else? We could bring our bags of knitting with us, and knit and talk while we wait for our food.

As I mentioned before, I'll be having family in town when SAFF takes place. I have never been to SAFF before...in fact, I have never been to any kind of organized knitting or fabric event!

So I'm wondering...will there be ANYTHING there of interest to non-knitters? I don't know if I should invite my sister and bro-in-law to come with me to the fair or not. I know my sister has crocheted in the past.

Mrs D - Last year I took my Dad & Uncle. They survived and even enjoyed it enough to go again this year. My dad appreciated the spinning going on, the animals, wood working, he even checked out the clothes. That is where I encouraged him to try alpaca. He wants more alpaca clothes.

Any non-knit folk *may* be a bit bored after a while. However, there are things there to kindda keep them occupied while we get googlie over fleeces & yarn.

Check out the link and maybe see if there are any classes she may enjoy

It's a mixed bag. Depends on what your non-knit folk like to see and do. My dad was into livestock so he enjoyed seeing the critters and he just liked seeing me excited over everything. I don't get that excited over anything else.

I'm taking the Oops Workshop on Saturday morning, and the Fair Isle Knitting class on Saturday afternoon.

We're planning on having breakfast at IHOP on Saturday morning at 8:00 AM, then possibly have dinner together somewhere when the day is done.

Originally, I had planned on staying overnight. But, I can't do that now. I'm using my hubby's car to travel there and back, and he needs it Friday night. And I have to play organ at church Sunday morning. So, that leaves out any opportunity for overnight stay.

But, Saturday will be a happy, full day! :)

I wish I could tell you, but I really have no idea. I figure there will be lots of people there anyway, because of the pretty fall leaves. I bet it's gonna be PACKED! :teehee:

Hi all! I've been away from knitting and this site for quite a few months but I'm back now!

I'm just perusing all the posts on here and see that I stumbled onto this one just in time! I have put this event on my calendar and will try to go, it sounds AWESOME!

My boyfriend however, is recovering from back surgery, so I'm not sure if he would survive the 2 hours in the car to get there. We'll see tho!

How fun! I've only been knitting the basics for about two years and I have never even been to even a LYS, let alone a great show like this!!

Now I can't even imagine being able to go. I just found out yesterday that my parents will be coming with my sister and brother in law. I don't know even know how my dad (86), who is disabled, is going to manage in our 100 year old house without a full bath or bedroom on the first floor. There are steps and stairs (not always level or of the expected height!) all over the place. You have to go down a step to go from the kitchen to the breakfast table, to get in and out of the house, etc. etc. And I was reminded that I committed to taking my 8yr old daughter and her friend to a party on Saturday. I might bring them by to see the animals after that.

But it's okay. My parents are willing to put themselves out to see us; I know they know they won't be very comfortable here. Love is...Mother and Dad!

I will definately be there on Sat. :psst: For any men who might get bored, send them down the hill (back behind the animal barns) to the antique tractor pull. It is Fall Harvest Days and they will have tons of antique tractors to look at as well as watch. My husband has looked forward to this for the past year. It is Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun. The one on Sun is down in the lower lot. I'm not sure if it means where the ones on Fri and Sat are ( In the covered building) or if it's the lot on the other side of the large parking lot, back where the tree line is. You should be able to see where it's at if you stand at the top of the hill and look toward the trees. There will be lots of cars and trucks parked there. It definately keeps my husband occupied while my daughter and I are at SAFF. I live here also so if anyone has any questions just let me know.

Just so you all know, the 60th Annual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands is being held
Thursday, October 18th, 2007 - Sunday, October 21st, 2007
at the Asheville Civic Center 87 Haywood Street.
It's a pretty big event. Last year I tried to go and could not find a parking space ANYWHERE and had to turn around and go home.

Also, most hotels in this area have a 3 night minimum in October, and they are usually full. So make sure you have firm lodging plans/reservations.

Wow! I can't believe that SAFF is in ONE WEEK!!!
That's just 7 days away! OMG! OMG!! :woohoo:

Just think about it....1 week from RIGHT NOW, we will have already had breakfast together at IHOP, and we'll be walking through ROWS AND ROWS of gorgeous yarn and fiber and spinning wheels!
I think I'm gonna faint! :passedout:

I know one thing...I'm gonna take TWO memory cards for my digital camera, so I can get PLENTY of photos.

And I can't wait to look into the sweet eyes of another alpaca. They steal my heart every time. :inlove:

OMG!! OMG!!! (can you tell I'm excited?) :teehee:

The only downer is that I don't have much money this time. :pout: We are behind in our house payment, so all our money has to be set aside for that. I'm only gonna be able to bring about 50-100 dollars. :help:
Waaah! :waah:

Oh well....I have plenty of fiber and yarn in my stash already. It will be fun just BEING there, seeing all the fiber animals, and the spinning wheels, and the GORGEOUS YARN!

Plus, I've already paid for my two classes, so I don't have to worry about that.

I'll probably use my money for gas and food and one more skein of Brooks Farm yarn. I only bought one skein last time, because I wanted to buy roving for my spinning wheel instead. Now, I have a BOATLOAD of fiber and roving at home, so I really don't need anymore.

But, if I see roving that knocks my socks off, I'll have to buy that too. :teehee:

I just hope I have enough gas to make it back home.
(maybe I'll call my hubby when I'm halfway back, begging him to come and rescue me) :)

Now I can't even imagine being able to go.
I'm sorry you can't come, MrsDavis! :verysad:

I will definately be there on Sat. For any men who might get bored, send them down......to the antique tractor pull.
Cool! I look forward to meeting you, nicurn!
And thanks so much for the idea for our non-fiber guests!

We ate at IHOP tonight (our usual Wed. evening meal). I asked our waitress if she was ready for the onslaught of knitters that would be descending this weekend. She thought that was funny, and asked me if I was going. I told her yes, and that I was meeting fellow knitters for breakfast there. She might be working that morning, too. Hey, they can't say they weren't warned!!

I'm thinking that Saturday morning, you and I will probably get there early.

If you want, one of us can go on inside and hold a table, and the other can stand outside to greet other KHers, with a sign that says, "Hello KHers!" :)

Sound like a plan?

8 ounces of beautiful, soft roving in the color "English Garden", a lovely shade of deep blue/teal. ($12.50)
I bought another 8 ounces of the exact same roving last year, so now I have a pound!
The book "Knits for Barbie" ($5)
A bar of handmade soap for sensitive skin. ($3.50)
The white book is the handout they gave to all attendees. Lots of helpful information. ;) (free)
So, I spent a total of $75, plus about $25 for breakfast, dinner, and coffee while I was driving. So, I stayed exactly within my $100 budget! (Marvin had filled the car with gas before I left.)

Yup can you immagine every color out there and then some in one place there were so many choices and colors it took me 2 days to decide on a yarn and 1/2 of that was trying to decide on the color. I finally put them next to each other closed my eyes and picked....lol This is what I came up with. 500 Yards of 100% Kid Mohair by Brooks Farm Yarn out of TX.:inlove: I didn't have quite the same problem when it came to the fiber. I got Flax, Angora and some more Angora, Alpaca and more Alpaca, Cotton, Tencel and a little bit of shimmer for fun...lol :woot: Oh yeah I also get felting needles a book on Felting faces and some sample wools for felting. And I took the most wonderfull class of spinning ever. It was awesome!

I was the same exact way, then I forced myself to take it out at the end of the day. I could hardly walk, but I made myself walk around one more time, with my camera in hand. It was easier to take photos at the end of the day, because the crowds had died down. I imagine I would have been mowed down by the madding crowd if I'd tried earlier. :teehee:

OMG Sandy! I can't believe you got all that at those unbelievable prices. Where was all that that I didn't see. Everything I saw was like $20-$30 a hank. Next time I have to go with you. My DH and DS were not very helpful.
I'm so glad I went though. I got to meet misha, yeah!!!
I didn't take many pictures either. I kept forgetting that I had my camera. The pictures we took together came out really nice. I'll post them as soon as I get a chance to download them.
Sandy, next time we meet, I would like to see that barbie book.

I did manage to get to the fair on Sunday.

I tried to go all around once without buying, then go back only to what really had made an impression on me. I ending up buying something when I had gone half way around the center floor.

Anyway, I think it was Brooks Farm yarns that really stood out in my mind. Aren't they the ones that make "Duet"? I nearly bought a ton of that, but then I noticed a scarf made from it on display, and I think it might be one of those yarns that is more striking in a hank than knitted up.

I'm a SUPER patient shopper, because I have no money. :teehee:
I've been lucky, but it was because I invested lots of time and energy.
When I got to SAFF, I had to go straight to my first class. When I realized that I already knew everything she was teaching, I left the class early and looked around. There were a few things I had already planned on getting, so I concentrated on those things.
I walked all around one time, then went upstairs and walked around there too. Then, after I had my lunch, I came back in and walked around again. This is the time I walked VERY SLOWLY, looking for sales. I got the 9 skeins of Gedifra from a lady that didn't have any other customers. I was shocked that no one else was going through her clearance box at the side of her display. She and I talked while I browsed. I got all those skeins of yarn in the same color lot, and grabbed the 1 other skein of yarn as well. I also got the Barbie knitting book from her. I was so pleased! :)
The only other thing I bought was the soap, the sweatshirt, and the roving. I paid full price for all those things. So, my luck was all at one vendor.
You win some, you lose some.

I have one skein of their yarn that I bought last year. It was the "Riatta" yarn. You're right...they also have a yarn called "Duet". I've never tried knitting with my Brooks Farm. I should do that, and let you know how it works.

I had a great time!! Sandy, thanks for sharing the pic. :hug:I'm so glad we got to meet for breakfast. Lestrella, I hope you can get your pics uploaded soon! (I was a dunce and forgot my camera.)

I bought a hank of that beaded tilli (she was the only vendor who had it; I haven't actually seen it before, and hey, I didn't have to pay shipping!) along with some of her hand-dyed handspun for my sister. I also bought a hank of some lovely pink hand-dyed from a Ravelry member (can't remember her name, but she was on the main floor in the Ag Center.) And some Heavy Metal Wool. The name alone cracked me up, so I had to get some. Also, a hank of YarnSmiths Isis in a gorgeous purple/green colorway (it was too pretty *not* to buy it). I also made a trip to the airport ATM (I wasn't giving up my parking space!) b/c I found a hank of Persimmon Tree Farm that was calling me. She only took cash or check, and I was about 1.20 short! It was worth the walk, though. Oh, and some soap from the same person Sandy got hers from. Shhhh...we're not telling my husband how much I spent!!

how was the drive back?
My drive back was HORRIBLE!! I was so sleepy, I could hardly keep my eyes open. I stopped 3 times for coffee and bathroom breaks. At the last stop, I was so desperate to stay awake, that I bought a pack of cigarettes. (I quit smoking 6 years ago.)
I must have looked hilarious with my windows down, and radio blaring, while singing along and bouncing around in the seat in time with the music, with a cigarette in my hand. :roflhard:
I paid the price for smoking for two days. My throat has been KILLING me!
Next year, I'll be going down on Friday, and staying overnight. That way, I'll be able to leave Saturday afternoon. That will make my life much easier.
Shhhh...we're not telling my husband how much I spent!!
Well, I was WONDERING why you were so quiet about your purchases. :teehee:

Does anyone know the booth that was selling Tillie Tomas Disco Lights at SAFF? I know it was upstairs across from Yarn Paradise, but I don't have my map anymore and can't really read the one online.

Or does anyone know a place in NC or online that sells the yarn?

Thanks!

Yes! Cottage Yarn has it! :)
Here's a closer view of the SAFF map, in case you are still wondering who that seller was. (I copied the photo to Paint, and saved it in Flickr.)
