I hope I'm not the last one knitting these,...............they're so gorgeous, surely we'll do them again and again.

This is my second attempt, the first try being frogged because I ran short of yarn.

I'm following the chart this time, rather than the instructional text, and finding it much easier going !

I'm using some solid pink Chinese wool purchased here........

and I think that the natural stretchiness of it is going to be a real asset.

Here's my progress so far............

Please join me, and share pics if you've got them ! I don't mind seeing ones you've already knitted..........just want a little monkey company !

I just finished my first pair of monkey socks last night. They are only my 3rd pair of socks, and I have only been knitting 4 months, so they aren't too hard. Just remember that the lace pattern is not very stretchy. At the LYS where I knit a couple of days a week, we are having a sock of the month KAL right now. We take turns picking a pattern for the month, then everyone knits it out of what ever yarn they want.

One lady knit her monkey socks with a larger size needle on the leg/cuff (size 2) they went back to the size 1 for the heel, foot and toe. Just a suggestion in case your socks seem too tight.

Thank you, Jill A. That sounds exactly right to me. The first attempt I made at doing the Monkey -- -- I used an acrylic boucle' baby yarn that had NO GIVE, and I could hardly get it on over my heel.........I frogged it later, for lack of yarn, but it was really coming out lovely.......see here.......

But this yarn I'm using now has proven to be the stretchiest I've ever tried, so I thought it was the perfect candidate for another attempt.........and it seems to be working out very well ! I'm using size 2 dpns, (can't remember -and didn't note- what size I used the first try), and I think I will switch to 1's for the foot part of the sock.:happydance:

Please share pics of your finished socks..............I have trouble with resizing photos for this site, but I have found that using this link works like a charm..............http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/

I just save the downloaded file to my computer and then add it through the 'manage attachments' button.

Here's last night's progress..............I'm fixing to get them out in just a minute and do the last repeat of the chart before the heel. If I had an extra set of size 2's , I'd go ahead and do the second sock up to the same point, but I don't have the needles...............I may put this one on a holder so that I can use the needles, anyway ! I've never done two socks at once, because I've been afraid that the first one wouldn't fit, and I'd have two to frog instead of just one. But this one is looking like a keeper, and it WOULD be fun to be done with both at once !

Hold the presses !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I found more size 2's in my dpn roll !
Must have forgotten I had them.......my age, you know !

Anyway, I have officially joined the ranks of knitters doing 2 socks at once ! Granted, they're not both on one set of needles like some can do, but atleast they'll progress pretty evenly, and there won't be such a wait for the pair to be finished ! :woohoo:

I'm 8 rounds into the ribbing on the second sock, and left the first one waiting for the heel to begin.

Those socks are neat! :knitting:

I am doing wyvern too, but monkey is just gorgeous!!

I just started these last week! I am not very far, but I love them so far. Glad to see that some others are doing it also.

I don't want to make Monkey socks. I need to make Monkey socks. ;)

Allright, girls ! Glad you're all joining in ! :woohoo:

I finished mine tonight !:happydance:

I can't wait to see your progress !

hi, redhead ! I remember you from chat ! DO THE MONKEY !

Oh goodness, those socks look amaaaaazing! Did you do the same length of cuff as the pattern called for? I've only knit socks with about 20 rows of cuff, but I think I would like to make them just the size of yours with this pattern. The color really shows off that awesome lace pattern! Nice work :D

07-27-2007, 03:03 AM
Yes, redheadrachel !.........I did the cuff with the 6 repeats that the pattern called for and my foot took 7 repeats (I wear a size 8 1/2 or 9 ladies' shoe).

I think I must have cast on the two different socks on two different sized needles, because they fit differently. I always go bigger than what I knit the socks with, but I think I must have used a size 6 for one, and a size 8 for the other. I keep both in the case with my sock knitting needles, and they are the same color:hair:. Both socks fit, but one ribbing is definitely looser than the other.

I do love the taller cuffs ! Luckily these were that way without any changes................and I still had 110 yards of yarn left when I was done !

It's at the very beginning of this thread, but here it is again: http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter06/PATTmonkey.html

Ooh, I just started my first one! I decided to only do three repeats of the lace pattern before the heel, but I'm really excited! This pattern is just so fun to work!!!!!!! :D

07-29-2007, 06:05 PM
Go, redheadrachel, go, go, go !:knitting:

Isn't the pattern easy? The first time I tried it, I used the written instructions, and it was much slower. I found that looking at the chart kindof 'put it into my head', like shorthand or something !

07-29-2007, 08:05 PM
Ooh, following the chart - that's a good idea. I tend to shy away from charts when the same thing has written directions, but I'm going to try it and see if that works it up a bit quicker. Thanks for the tip, that's what KALs are for!!

Anyone following this thread.........be sure and check out the "Any Sock KAL", too !

It's going to be an ongoing thread, kept alive with ANY sock that you are knitting on........whether it's your first, your last, or just your next !

I'm just finishing the foot on the first sock in my pair. I still have to do the toe.

Did anyone else find that the sock is very tight across the instep? (around the heel to where the ankle bends) I'm partially tempted to rip it out and use a bigger needle just for the gusset decrease section to see if that makes a difference.

08-19-2007, 03:54 PM
I ended up frogging mine because it was for some reason too large... :( And I'm usually a tight knitter. Maybe if you keep checking gauge throughout the piece and change needles when neceesary.

08-19-2007, 07:54 PM
Yep, my first one, done in a rayon boucle' yarn was almost too snug to get over my heel. I think I used size 1 needles on it. On this finished pair, I used 2's for the cuff and heel, and then 1's for the foot. Much better fit.......of course, this was a stretchier yarn.....a Chinese fingering weight wool.

08-20-2007, 08:08 AM
I'm using Crystal Palace Panda wool and it is quite stretchy. I used 2.5mm needles for the whole thing. I'm not sure what to do about. I finished the sock last night. it is a bit hard to get on but feels great when I'm wearing it. I think I will leave it, make the other one the same and just keep it in mind for my next pair. hmmmm..... (yup.. call me lazy!)

08-20-2007, 08:14 AM
Mine are coming along really well. There my first pair and Im loving them!!

08-20-2007, 12:44 PM
That's not lazy, cara...........a finished sock represents a lot of work..........you have to really think about it long and hard before deciding to 'frog it' !

I was going to do the same thing with my blue one that was so snug.........I would have worn them as it was, but I found that I didn't have enough yarn to make two complete socks, so the decision was made for me. I don't think the ones I finished are near as pretty as those were going to be !
