View Full Version : Dream Swatch KAL

Stiney
07-24-2007, 02:59 PM
A bunch of us who went to Fiber Fest are knitting the Dream Swatch (http://www.knitandtonic.typepad.com/dreamswatchwrap.pdf), so I thought I'd make a KAL since we're all making modifications and such. :teehee:

I'm using my KH-colored yarn.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1430/879624104_52873b531a.jpg

So far, I've cast on 18 stitches, and I'm wrapping the yarn 5 times instead of 3 for the elongated stitches. The first couple look like poo, so that might change.

Ooohhhh....

This might be just the thing for that lone ball of blue alpaca that was returned to me due to issues in another yarn swap.

I like this.

I am totally in. I am also going to use my "KH" yarn. I think. I am frogging today and starting over.

I'm mostly though mine, but can I join anyway? :-) I'm enjoying it - using noro Daria Multi - it's so pretty :-)

Definitely needs blocking though.

I can't get the link to work :pout: I want to know what a dream swatch is.

Stiney
07-24-2007, 07:28 PM
There seems to be a problem with the website. I would contact knit and tonic about it. It was working earlier.

CarmenIbanez

It's a free pdf download, so if someone has downloaded it, maybe they could email it to you? I only have a print out right now.

Stiney
07-24-2007, 10:13 PM
It seems to be working now, but I can send you a PDF of the pattern if you PM me your email address. I had downloaded this ages ago to make and forgotten about... I only found it because of Angelia posting it again!

ETA: Six Apart, the company that owns both TypePad and LiveJournal, had a major crash at their data center today. Knit & Tonic is a TypePad blog, which is why the pattern link wasn't working. TypePad is back up, so you should be able to download the pattern yourself.

I'm in, but I'm using my KH yarn for socks. I'm using that pretty bamboo from Fishbed! :inlove:

I've got about 6 pattern repeats done from last night, and I love it! I'm just doing it exactly as-written, though.

What IS up with the smileys? :??

Stiney

I've decided to go with four wraps instead of 5, but I'm too lazy to frog. I think that casting on 18 stitches instead of the 24 gives me the width I want, so I won't frog unless I decide (again) that I want it skinnier. :teehee: I've got about 4 repeats done, 2 are with the 5 wraps, 2 with the 4. Shhh, don't tell anyone.

sara_jayne

I started mine last night and I'm loving it so far. I only got through two repeats though, I was tired! I used US 5s and did 24 stitches, the width was good for me. I'll try to post progress pics tonight after I get some more knitting time in over lunch! :cheering:

I am in. I am knitting this with some yarn someone gave me. I am only doing 18 stitches too. but, since I had to frog the other day, then I got Harry Potter, I haven't started back, so I don't know how many wraps i will do. Wonder if I could finish this in time to wear to my frind's daughters wedding on Saturday :??

Can't wait to get started!

:??Or should I finish one of my other 10 projects first?

Stiney
07-25-2007, 11:04 AM

I love it Jillle. I was naughty and started mine even though I have way too much OTN. It is just a ton of fun. I'm making mine out of Andean Treasure (http://www.knitpicks.com/Andean+Treasure_YD5420107.html)
in Moss. It got one skein from my secret pal and have been fondling it ever since. I thought about making it a hat because I wanted it around my face (I have red hair and green eyes so it is going to look amazing), but I've only got wooden DPNs and it just wasn't working well with them. When I saw this, I knew that this is what it had to become, and I'm loving it. The pattern is fun, and the yarn is so soft. I'll take some pictures when I get some more done.

As for the extra stitches on the sides ... I tried that over the weekend, and the problem is that you can't continue the extra stitches on the rows w/ the elongated stitches or you will get bunching. I'm thinking blocking will probably help w/ the curling ... has anyone blocked yet?

My skeins are only 50m each, so I needed to order two extra (*ahem*) to finish it - on the third skein now and it's really curling - I'm hoping blocking will help but, if it doesn't, then at least I'm going to be wearing it quite tight around my head so should lie flat, with kind of tube bits hanging down, which'll still look pretty. You just use the little tightener screw thingie (yes, that's a technical term :teehee:). I've never had any unscrew on me. Doooooo it!!!!

You both needs Options ... 'cause I'm the expert now, you know.

Kate -- the separate needles & cords are a *feature* ( :teehee: ) ... no worries about that unless you don't get them fastened tightly enough. One thing I wish the Options set had is a little rubber piece like the Boyes set. It allows you to grip the needle tip tightly while using the key to get a good solid connection.

Anyway, I haven't started my DS (again) yet. I *did*, however, start my Diagonal Triangle Tank last night. :cheering:

I can't really buy them now anyways...maybe in a few months.

I have about 8 inches on my Dream Swatch. It took me a while to get the hang of the pattern, but it's going well now. I cast on 24 stitches, and mine isn't looking nearly as wide as the one in the photos...but I think I like it better that way.

Once people start finishing this, I think we need to see some FOs being modeled! :teehee:

I went through my knitting stuff the other day, and I found several projects that I didn't know I had. Is that the name we decided on?

I need to be more organized in my knitting. Waaaaaaaay too much ADD!
I went through my yarn yesterday.
Got a bag full of yarn I can donate to my niece (who is knitting scarves for her friends).
Found three projects I started, but needed to be frogged and be restarted at a later time.
Have a sweater that has no sleeves.
Still have not found my size 13 Options. I don't remember ever using them!:??Dr. Swatch on the needles and then????

Janna, mine's not curling with bamboo. Sorry you keep having to frog it! That sucks!

Here is my WIP Dr. Swatch. Of course, my beautiful model Astrid thinks it's divine (I see some chihuahua legwarmers in her future) but it still needs to be finished and blocked. So now that it is done and blocked, it is willing to stay flat, but it still likes to curl. It is not enough that it really bothers me, but I just wanted to let you guys know how it turned out. Here's the pics:

Amanda, are you a square head? I swear with your features, we could be twins. High forehead, big eyes, button nose. Maybe we were separated at birth?
I have no idea if I'm a square head. I normally can't wear headbands. The ones that stop right behind the ears are always too tight and they give me headaches, and the ones that wrap all the way around or are elastic circles usually slide from the front/middle of my head to the back. That use to make me think my head was cone shaped so they wanted to roll right up and refused to stay put.

Either way I'm all about having a long lost twin! Now we just have to figure out which one of us is evil.

Hey everyone! Does anyone know about the average amount of time required for this project? It's on sport weight, right?

Also, does it end up long enough to use as a cute belt?

Stiney
08-15-2007, 11:19 AM
The pattern calls for DK, but I don't see why you HAVE to use DK. It would probably work on anything.

I can't talk about time because I'm too slow a knitter.

And you can make it as long as you want, so as long as you have enough yarn, you can make it long enough to be a belt.

hunterjenn
08-15-2007, 11:48 AM
I'm not good at estimating time, but I can say it's a quick little knit.

If you're going to use it as a belt, I'd make it narrower...mine's a good 5-6 inches wide.

Jillle
08-15-2007, 12:07 PM
I made mine narrower than the pattern and it works fine as a belt.
I'm a slow knitter, but I would say...less than 10 hours? Does that seem right?

I'm using some 100% silk yarn that Cate bought for me while we were at Fishbed. I forget the brand and the tag is across the room  It's purple. Does that help?

Anyway, since my tape measure is also across the room, I'm going to say I'm about 24" in and I :!!!: LOVE it! I'm hoping to finish before Friday so I can wear it to my golf outing. I think I should be able to do it because I'm off tomorrow :cheering:

OK. I had to join this KAL I liked everyones pics. And this pattern is so easy too. I find it is knitting up quite quick.

I wonder if it would make a good pattern for a wrap? Any opinions on a wrap in this patter ladies?

I think it would make a cute wrap.

Not a bad idea!

You guys are making me want to knit one...but the pattern looks confusing.

I thought the same, Cate, but it's not hard once you actually sit down and try it...I promise :psst: (I'm not a very adventurous knitter, so you know that if I can do it, you can!!)

Thanks for the kind words, ladies...I bought a bunch more skeins of various colors for a bunch of these! :cheering:

I am going to make several as well, and give them to my friends and tell them that now they are in the "cool kids club". Then we're going to wear them at school and make all the other teachers jealous!

Sorry, just making fun of some stupid juvenile attitudes at school lately. *sigh*

I have 3 repeats done on mine. I am taking it to the sit n' knit tonight, along with the sweater I need to finish this week

I finished mine on Sunday. And my husband was the first one to wear it. Yes I said my husband. He plays football with a bunch of young guys and they all wear pink socks there team shirts have pink writing on them so when he seen my finished scarf he right away said "I gotta wear that" So he wore it around his head like a warrior would. I will post a pic later if I can make the camera work right.

Okay, so, as those of you who read my Blog thread know, I recently chopped off all my hair. I'm thinking it would look silly to use the Dream Swatch as a headband that ties at the back of my head with the strings hanging down.

Do you agree? Disagree? Why?

If you disagree, do you think I should continue knitting on it until I have enough length to wear it as a belt?

Or, do you think I should stop knitting it when it is the circumference of my head, seam up the ends, and wear it as a headband like that?

Alternatively, do you have another suggestion?

You could wear it rambo style.

Oh Oh!! Or make holes for your eyes, and be a new teenage mutant ninja turtle!

With short hair, I'd probably say seam it once its the circumference of your head and wear it as a headband.
Or, decrease it down to icords or something so you can tie it but not have strips of fabric left over.

Edit: 'Scuse me. I totally thought this was in your blog. :teehee:

It does have the holes between the elongated stitch crosses.

:teehee:

Hooray, that means I'm almost done! I just checked Ravelry, and there is a woman who made hers with only 2 repeats, and used a button in the back. I'll probably make it just a bit smaller than my haid, so it won't just slip around willy-nilly.

Depending on how long it is you could also use it as a belt

I'm almost done with mine. The thing needs a really hard block though. :!!!: curling!

I think it all depends on how much you really want to continue knitting this thing!

I could use a FO-esteem-boost. (It's been months. :pout:)

Plus, I have MORE than enough left to make another that could be long enough to use as a belt. :teehee:

If you knit a belt too then you'd be mathcy!!!! :blooby:

I'm gonna have a TON of KH yarn left over too. No belt for me though!
