Id like to get some books for my niece for her 1st birthday coming up in October. She loves her stuffed otter Ollie, so Im wondering if anyone knows any children books about otters (yes, I know its random).

She is also obsessed with ducks, everything is duck this and duck that.:teehee: Id like to get her a duck book too. She already has Make Way for Ducklings but do any of you have suggestions for others?

Thanks!

I just searched on Amazon for otter books...there are some cute ones on there!! I don't know how any of them are, but this one (http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Sea-Otter-Betty-Tatham/dp/0805075046/ref=sr_1_9/002-1877152-6733631?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188234041&sr=1-9) looks cute.

And there are other duckling books out there. I just bought a duckling board book for my nephew-to-be, but I can't think of what it's called. I found it in a WaldenBooks. You can also search "duckling" on Amazon.

Reading is sooo important and how wonderful of you to start her early.

My all time favorite book is Seuss's McElligot's Pool. A little boy sits down to fish and his imagination runs wild about what is in the pond that he might catch.

Let's see - The Ugly Duckling, Are You My Mommy by Carla Dijs is about a chick looking for his mother, Goodnight Moon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Brown Bear Brown Bear What do You See?

At 1 year old, board books are good. My 10-month old newphew LOVES "Brown Bear, Brown Bear", "Good Night Moon", "The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear", and others like that. Books where the pages can be turned quickly and the child can "point to the duck" or identify things are really good for that age, too. If she likes animals, there will be books like that for identifying animals (and making animal sounds), as well as ones for shapes, trucks, etc.

For Duck books, you HAVE to look at "Click Clack Moo Cows that Type" and "Giggle Giggle Quack" and that series. Yes, the first one is about cows, but the duck starts the whole thing http://www.amazon.com/Click-Clack-Moo-Cows-That/dp/0743461517/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-9353318-1006561?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188236542&sr=8-1

I love "Click Clack Moo"! She might be a little young for this, but when I was learning to read, I loved Oscar Otter. (http://www.amazon.com/Oscar-Otter-Can-Read-Book/dp/0064440257/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-9652810-6133529?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188237805&sr=1-1) It's really cute. [/color]

Well looks like I'll have to check out Click, Clack, Moo and Brown Bear Brown Bear. With all of these suggestions there's so many I want to look at, they're all so fun! I'm going to have to make a trip to Borders to check them out then place an order on Amazon.

My daughter is 15 months - she loves any Eric Carle book, and Sandra Boynton. And ditto the others on Click Clack Moo - my son has that book, and both kids like it. Its funny enough that I don't mind reading it again and again, and the kids like the pictures :)

As a Pre-K teacher, I would definitely have to recommend anything by Eric Carle, Click Clack Moo & the sequels, Bear Snores On, and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie & the sequels.

I just remembered the Ping stories - they're probably a bit old for her, but good ones to keep in mind: http://www.amazon.com/Story-about-Reading-Railroad-Books/dp/0448421658/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-9353318-1006561?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1188390767&sr=8-1

If you can get it there..please see if you can buy "Possum Magic" by Mem Fox. It has been a best seller here for years. I think the top selling book ever for children. It is a lovely book with gorgeous illustrations.

I also love Richard Scarry's work because there is SO much to explore with a child on every page.

Gosh..the Ping books..now THAT takes me back :)

And Peter Rabbit books are often lovely. And for kids snuggly in bed and being read to..Wind In The Willows can be magic also.

And who could forget House at Pooh Corner with Pooh, Tigger, Rabbit, Eyeore....

My kids are teenagers, but if I remember correctly there's a book called Marcella and the Moon. Very cute and about ducks (I think) Wish I could dig it out to be sure.

Oh, someone beat me to the Click Clack Moo book. I personally love that book :teehee: I don't have kids, but my husband has an uncanny ability to pick out awesome children's books for his niece and nephews. He loves the Eric Carle and Richard Scarry books. We both kinda grew up with those too.

Check out some books by Simms Taback:heart:. He's written some award winning books for older children, but I recently found that he wrote some animal books aimed at younger ones.

Dr. Seuss does board books, too, and those were about the only ones I could stand reading over and over (and over) to my boys. :teehee:

My SIL put Brown Bear Brown Bear on Cammie's birthday wishlist, so I think that is one I will definitely go for!
