I've finally jumped into making my first sweater from this (http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/70038.html) pattern. The problem is that I think the pattern may be wrong. I'm working on the left front, but it is looking like the right front since the garter stitch is on the left...it should be on the right for the left front. My problem now is that the right front is where the button holes go. Should I follow the pattern to make the button holes on this side?
I'm also confused here:


RIGHT FRONT
Cast on 16 (18, 20, 22) sts.
Rows 1-4: Knit.
Row 5 (RS): Knit.
Row 6 (WS): P 11 (13, 15, 17), k 5. Rep last 2 rows until piece measures 3 (4, 5, 7) in. [7.5 (10, 12.5, 18 cm] from beg, end with a WS row.
Buttonhole Row (RS):K 2, yo, k2tog, finish row.
Work even until piece measures 5½ (7½, 8½, 10½) in. [14 (19.5, 22, 27 cm] from beg, end with a WS row.
Next Row (RS): Rep Buttonhole Row.
Continue in St st until piece measures same as Left Front to neck shaping. Shape neck as for Left Front, reversing shaping. Bind off.

Am I supposed to start the buttonhole row after I've knit 5 1/2 in?

For the right front it says to shape neck the opposite of the L side but if the pattern is wrong I'm not sure if I should follow the L side instructions of the pattern but put in the button holes.

Sorry for all the questions but I'm super confused.

Left and Right front are L & R as you're wearing it, not as you knit it. It reads like the garter st band for for the Left will in fact be on the right of the piece as you're wearing it. Or the center front. Make the buttonholes on the Right front as written.

Ohhhh! That makes much more sense! Silly me, I'm not even sure why I didn't think about the sides while you are wearing it:aww: Thanks for the help!

I'm a little confused again, and I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. For shaping the neck, it says this:

Shape Neck
Next Row (WS): Bind off 5 (5, 6, 6) stitches for neck, finish row. Continue in St st, dec 1 st at neck edge every row 2 (3, 3, 4) times – 9 (10, 11, 12) sts. When piece measures same length as Back, bind off.

Does this mean that I bind off 6 stitches and finish the row. Then I would continue to work 2 more rows and the 3rd would be another bind off row? When I continue with the bind off, is it only 1 bind off stitch every 3 rows? I hope my question makes sense. Thanks!

It says BO 6, and dec at neck edge every row 3 times. So, BO 6, finish the row. Next row, purl to last 2 sts, p2tog, turn, K2tog, knit to end of row. Then purl the 3rd row, p2tog at the end. You should have 11 sts then, and knit until the right length and BO all sts.
