I finally ventured to mittens, very easy and very quick love them! But why on my M1 increases for the thumb do I have a hole?
Here are the mittens, very happy with how they turned out, used bulky yarn so they will be nice and warm

And here are the holes:

I tried to follow the pattern, using m1, knit thru the back. did I twist it somehow?

Cute mittens! I've never made mittens so I have no ideas on the hole.

Is M1 the one where you pick up the bar in the middle of the two stitches? You have to knit into the back or front so that it twists the stitch. Depends on which way you pick it up.

To be honest though I've had some issues with that increase, too.

I like the mittens though! Cute!

Nice mittens. I think on the M1 that you want to twist it, the twist closes the hole. If you pick up a M1 in the front, you knit it in the back and if you pick it up in back you knit it in front. Both of those end up adding a twist to close the hole. The holes you got could be from something else though. I know with some things, for instance underarms of sweaters, you can get little holes. Sometimes you can just intuitively pick up a strand and put it on the needle and knit it with the next stitch in places where a hole thinks it might want to be. I've read about that little trick in Knitting Without Tears by Elizabeth Zimmermann.

I found a lady talking about closing unwanted holes here (http://www.madrone.com/Knitting/polo.html). Read down to the middle.

Yes, it's that M1. I think I picked up the bar in the middle and just slipped it on the left needle in the way it was when I picked it up (if that made sense) Then I knit into the back, it seemed funny, maybe that's what I'm doing wrong.
The holes don't seem too bad though. And my Mom doesn't knit, so she won't know.
Part of the design?:roflhard:

I don't know why, but that makes total sense. Now I just have to see if it still makes sense when I try it!
