I've decided to go with a neck warmer instead of a scarf for my SIL. I found this pattern (http://spiritworkblog.typepad.com/photos/stash_buster_ideas_projec/laceyneckwarmer2.html) and think it's perfect except I would like to knit it flat so she could button it around her neck instead of slipping it over her head.

I have yet to knit anything with buttons or button holes. Can anyone suggest how to adapt this pattern?
