“Baby, it’s cold outside!”

The days are getting shorter and the evenings (and some days, depending on where you live) are getting cooler. That’s right….Winter isn’t far away! On that note, we are having a “Winter Wonderland Swap”. I am honored to be your hostess for this swap and am looking forward to our all having a wonderful time.

What could be more wonderful a cold winter’s night than snuggling up with YARN, STITCHMARKERS in your favorite COLORS, perhaps a special pattern, and SOMETHING HOT to drink and knitting up something special to keep you warm and toasty?

This is a simple swap. It is an anonymous swap (like the Surprise Theme Swap which recently ended). You will have one person you will send a “Winter Wonderland” package tailored just for them, and a different person from whom you should receive a package tailored to you. We will have several cost categories for you to select from. You can make items or add more if you like, but this is not required. Registration for the swap will end on October 24th. Additionally, this swap does NOT require that you knit something for your swap partner! We probably all have piles of projects OTN, or headed that way, to be knit in time for the holidays. We don’t wish to add to that “to knit” list by requiring you to knit something for your partner. This swap is more about the supplies to enable us to knit something ourselves (or someone special). What a WONDERFUL thing to unwind and relax with during this hectic time of year.

Yes, this swap leads up to the December holiday period. As an international knitting community who likely all celebrate different holidays, we have decided to call this a “Winter Wonderland Swap” rather than focusing on any specific holiday (i.e. Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or any holiday I might have missed). I have, however, included questions in the questionnaire regarding holiday preferences and will do my very best to align partners accordingly. I just ask that you pay attention to your pal’s preferences. Note that you do not have to send holiday themed items. This is, after-all, a “Winter Wonderland Swap” so anything related to snow and/or keeping warm in it is great!

Package suggestions: Yarn, set of stitch markers or some beads for receiver to make stitch markers (yarn and markers/beads in receiver’s fave colors would be ideal!), and SOMETHING HOT to drink.
Following are the important swap dates:
Registration Opens: IMMEDIATELY
Registration Closes: OCTOBER 24th, 2007
Swap Partner Names Sent: by NOVEMBER 1, 2007
Package Postmark Date: Packages must be postmarked by December 8 to, hopefully, ensure everyone gets their packages by the various holidays.

The questionaire will be emailed to those who are intersted. Just let me know if you are interested and where to send the questionaire! If you have any questions, please PM me!

Happy Swapping everyone and thanks for joining us on this!

Ooops. Sorry, another minor omission of info.

Just noting your interest on here will be fine. I'll send the questionaire to you.... Actually, scratch that. I think I'll take yet ANOTHER clue from Jeanius80 (who ran such a WONDERFUL last swap) and post the questionaire here shortly. You can just copy and paste it and zap it back to me filled out.... That will probably help cut down on the possibility that I screw up and miss sending it to someone.

Following is the "Winter Wonderland Swap 2007" questionaire. Once the completed questionaire is received, you WILL receive a confirmation email noting that you are "in the swap".

Please complete the following questionnaire and email to heajames at austin dot rr dot com (please just replace the word “at” with the @ symbol and the words “dot” with a period).

WINTER WONDERLAND SWAP 2007 QUESTIONAIRE

KH name:
Real Name (First AND Last):
Mailing address for packages:
Primary email address:
Do you have a blog? If yes, what is the blog address?
Do you prefer your swap partner contact you via your primary email address OR via PM on KH?

1. Is there a particular type of pattern/stitch type you would prefer..IF you had the choice...just in case your swap partner wants to include a pattern in your package? (sock, scarf, hat… cables, lace, etc.)
2. Do you have any allergies or aversions your swap partner should know about? (animals, wool, smoke, chocolate, etc.)
ALSO... to make matching work, do you smoke or have pets?
3. With what size needles do you typically knit?
4. Do you prefer circular or straight needles? Do you prefer wooden, metal, or plastic needles?
5. Do you own an interchangeable needle set, and if so which one(s). (Just in case your swap partner wants to coordinate a gift around it.)
6. What are your FAVORITE colors?
7. What are your LEAST favorite colors?
8. What is your favorite HOT drink on a cold night? (i.e. coffee, tea, cocoa, cider, etc.)
9. What are three things you like most about winter?
10. Do you celebrate a specific holiday during the winter season? Do you, if numbers allow, prefer to be partnered with someone to do a more holiday specific focus on the “Winter Wonderland Swap”?
11. Which price category do you want to participate in? 10, 15, 20, 25 (I really don’t want to go beyond 25 as there are also shipping charges to be mindful of AND this is typically a “tight” financial time for many.)
12. Are you willing to ship internationally? (Please keep in mind this will raise shipping costs.)
13. Is this your first swap?
14. Are you willing to be a swap savior?

Happy Holidays and Happy Swapping :)

10-05-2007, 12:30 PM
another "oops!". Those of you who have already sent your questionaires in...I've got ONE more question that I failed to include in the original questionaire.

While I asked if you had any allergies, etc... I failed to question if you smoke or own pets (that would come in contact with your swap partners stuff). Would GREATLY appreciate your letting me know that answer so I can be sure that I get EVERYONE paired up with the "perfect" swap partner!

THANK YOU!!!!...and sorry for the inconveince.

Maybe if I can work it out so I'll know before the end of October, I'll join in. jeanius80
10-15-2007, 11:35 PM
a swap saviour is a person who sends a back up package or gift certificate in case a swapper gets no package or gets an inadequate (for their chosen price range) package (like they get $15 of yarn when they were supposed to get $30)

LOL... I saw Mulderknitter writing about the IRS and thought to myself, hob isn't going to know what she's speaking of. We'll just, instead, mark that it is a bill from the Queen. LOL....

FYI...the IRS is an EVIL entity. It takes a chunk of our money every paycheck and holds on to it interest free until the end of the year when, if you are lucky, you get some of it back (again sans interest). TAXES, baby... it's all about TAXES.

HELP!!! looks like I still don't have it.

knitncook shares how to make this work on page 5 (about middle of page) on this thread.

Welcome everyone!! We are still taking signups until next Wed. I'll work like a crazy woman after that to get everyone their partners by the 1st of Nov. I'm TRYING to also ensure that you don't get the same people you had in our most recent swap. Not that there is anything wrong with that and I can't make any guarantees, but working to keep things different and better allow for us to meet new people.

If you have not received your confirmation email, please give me a shout. I THINK I have everyone confirmed now but would hate to have missed someone.

Thanks all. I'm so very excited about this swap... new ideas every day!

They paid me interest when they held up a large correction on my refund for 3 months, though. I hadn't been expecting that. :)

IRS=Internal Revenue Service=Federal Tax collector in the United States. A rather inefficiently-run government bureaucracy. Most of us could rant a lot about this. SOME of the taxes do go to things I approve of, though. Like road repair. And grants for low income college students. And research on AIDS and cancer. I try to remember that while I fill out my tax forms.

Astonh-you so rock for putting this together!:woohoo:This is my first swap so I am way way way excited:woot:
I do have a question though: If I signed up for the $25 mark, is that $25 in yarn, or $25 total? I am not so sure with all of my ideas I can stay with just $25 total. I tend to go overboard (in a good way:muah:) with presents I know others will enjoy.

Because the holidays tend to suck us dry financially, I figured that the price category you sign up for will need to cover, as it did in the most recent swap, the basics (yarn and pattern). Copying Jeanius80 even MORE... (hey that is what you get for hosting such a fantastic swap)you are not required to get enough yarn for a particular project.

I feel that between stitchmarkers/beads, yarn, pattern, and something hot to drink we can pretty quickly meet our price categories. You aren't limited to that however. Knock your socks off BUT PLEASE don't drain your pocketbook on this swap. I want this to be a fun swap but not put a strain on anyone.

Hopefully that answered your question?

*sigh* I told myself I would stay out of this swap but then
I finalized my trip to the U.S. and am gonna be there until
Dec 7 so I decided I had to sign up....easier shipping for me!
:) The only thing is, to make things nice and confusing for
my partner, before Dec 7 they can ship to me in the
States, but after it will need to be shipped to me in Finland.
Hope no one minds!! Just sent my questionnaire!
I have no willpower especially since the last swap was so
much fun!!

Hey gang! We are up to 58 participants thus far. All confirmations SHOULD be sent. If you haven't received yours, PLEASE let me know. I want to be sure I dont' miss anyone!

I also would like to take just a bit and thank all of you, not only for joining in on what I hope to be a wonderful "Winter Wonderland" swap but also for all of you that are so flexible in your answers regarding the focus of your swap, your price & shipping categories as well as the number of you open to being a "swap savior". Having participated in a non-KH swap recently where I was in need of a "swap angel" I can say from experience that the recipient is VERY thankful for people like you who are willing to help out in a time of need. I'm hoping that we'll have no need for any of you to be a "swap savior" but I DO thank you for your willingness to be one.

Only a few more days and then Ii'll be working like a crazy woman trying to get partners matched and sent out to you all by the Nov 1 deadline.

That's a good idea! I didn't have any problems with
communication in the last swap, had great partners
both ways! I did feel sorry for those who were just
sort of left hanging with no real idea if their partner
was participating or what. I will definitely commit

As for contact within the swap, jeanius80, YES, I was going to mention that when I assigned partners. I had no problems with it in your swap, but apparently some have. It is only four weeks. That is only four emails you need to send. Good grief, I post more than that in a day. eeek.

WOW! We are up to 67 participants on this swap thus far! Thank you all for joining. :muah:

There is less than a day left to sign-up so tell all your KH friends to hurry on over and send in thier questionnaires (cause we all know they will be sorry if they miss out on this fun!).

Couple of reminders/rules I wanted to hit on...
1) price category you signed up for is meant to include yarn, pattern, stitchmarker (or beads), and something hot to drink. You do NOT need to knit anything for this swap and you are NOT required to send enough yarn for a particular project. This price category does NOT include shipping. (I think everyone already knows that, but I just wanted to be sure to note that.)

2) After much thought and all you guys' input, the following "rule" has been added... Contact AT LEAST 3 TIMES during the swap IS REQUIRED with your swap partner, with ONCE A WEEK HIGHLY DESIRED. That is, at most, four emails we are asking that you send to your partner. I wanted to "require" once a week period, but I don't want to be a complete Scrooge. I WILL however, require for this swap that you contact your partner at least 3 times. Recommended MININUM contact would be a (1) hello (2) general contact (3) package coming. You can do this via a secret identity/email and/or via PMing me and I can forward on the message(s). Not only will this contact enable us to feel "loved" but will enable us to better get to know one another.

Okay, enough with the rules. Let's have FUN!!!! Remember, sign-ups end VERY SOON!!! Partner assignments are not far behind. I know many of you are :tap: impatiently waiting for your partners... I'll hurry. I promise.

Thanks again everyone!

Holy cow. Seventy-one participants for the Winter Wonderland Swap. That is SO exciting. Even MORE exciting would be if someone might convince a friend to join us so we could have an even number for partnering purposes. Hee hee.

My fault. I got some last minute participants and despite needing an EVEN number to make all life easier I just couldn't bring myself to turn away just one so now we are an odd number. That said, if you have a friend who wanted to join but didn't get thier questionnaire in on time, I will take ONE MORE participant to the swap. Should no one else sign up, do not fret. You will all have someone sending you goodies and will have someone to send goodies to.

I'm so very excited to have you all joining us for the KH Winter Wonderland Swap 2007 and would like to extend an extra warm welcome to the many of you who noted this as being your first swap. I hope you have fun!!!

...

Because it wouldn't be as fun that way :teehee:

I haven't told anyone IRL about the swap thing because ... well, none of the people I know are knitters, and I had a hard enough time explaining why I wanted to learn how to make socks. (My mom's reaction was "But they're so cheap to buy!" :wall: ) But really... it's partly the surprise factor (if I buy yarn for myself, I know what I'm getting, so there isn't the "omg unexpected item squee" thing; partly the ... availability? ... factor, in that other people might have access to yarns I don't, or might select yarns I wouldn't have considered; and partly the fact that an item tends to be more happymaking when it's received as a gift, so even if you get something in the swap that you might have gotten for yourself, it's better for being picked out by someone else, plus there's the additional fun of doing the same thing to someone else.

Also, it's fun. Did I mention that yet? ;)

while there...what's the point?" *sigh* Men....you can't live

knitncook
10-26-2007, 09:36 AM
OK, why do you need even numbers to make the swap work? I'd make a list of the names and then put all the names on little slips of paper and then just draw names (for each level) OR you could just do a "round robin" 1 sends to 2, 2 sends to 3, 3 sends to 4, f sends to 5, etc until you get to the last number and that person sends to 1. Or are the two people sending to each other? That wouldn't be much of a surprise LOL!

astonh
10-26-2007, 10:09 AM
Lady Violet...got your questionnaire! Thank you again for joining us.

I don't guess you HAVE to have even numbers for a swap but it, for me anyway, makes it much easier.

As for just round robin matching or the other methods knitncook mentioned, the problem arises in that you have people willing to ship, within each price category, to different locations or not open to shipping to certain areas. Additionally, you have the whole allergies thing to work around AND I added the extra component (which hasn't proven to be difficult on this swap like I thought it might due to all you guys' wonderful flexibility) of being able to be holiday specific if you wanted. Just lots of little things that have to be carefully matched so everyone is getting the best possible match. Oh, and I'm also trying to ensure that no one who participated in the Surprise theme Swap gets their same partner combos. (I like to make things difficult. LOL)

ALL questionnaires have been received and I'm working on partners. I'll post a message here when they are being emailed out to you and another message when they have ALL been sent. That will allow you to know (1)when to start stalking your emailbox and (2) you will know when to give me a shout if you don't have yours...PLEASE be sure to check your spam emails and bulk emails first though.

Okay, well I'd love to stay and chat here with yens but I've got partners to match so we can all start having F U N !!!!:out:

cftwo
10-26-2007, 11:32 AM
reetz - I loved the yarns I got in my last swap. Even if it was just enough for a scarf with each yarn, I was able to try out something new and see how that yarn knit up. So just go and choose something pretty that will make a hat or a scarf or gloves and your swappee will just love it.

Lady Violet
10-26-2007, 01:31 PM

I hope, hope, hope that I got everyone paired with someone that they (1) didn't have in the previous swap if this isn't their first swap and (2) that matches appropriately with your shipping/allergy areas.

Please be sure to review the swap theme/guidelines noted on the very first post of this thread as well as the additional "rules/reminders" noted on page 12 of this thread.

Okay, I can already hear 1/2 of you beginning to chant, as Bill Cosby stated in one of his comic routines, "The BEATINGS will NOW BEGIN!" :!!!:

I've GOT to get a little more work done and then head home for the day. I've only got about 1/2 of you emailed thus far. Those who have not yet received your partner. I WILL get this out to you tonight/tomorrow. I'm SOOO VERY SORRY I was unable to get them ALL emailed out to you before day's end.

OOOOPS... so I got a little highlighter happy and now, without going through ALL the profiles (please don't make me), I don't recall those that were open to any $ category. I wanted to email you and let you know which one I ended up needing/putting you in. If you would not mind zapping me a note to let me know who you were so I can tell you where you ended up. I WILL TRY to go through the profiles to do this but your kindness in letting me know it was you would save me much time. Thx and I apologize for my little foopah on that.

Oh...and threesmom, a little snowman (or snowwoman) told me to tell you that they have your name, they know where you live and they CAN'T WAIT to get started shopping for you. Just wanted to pass on that little tidbit of info!

I don't have my partner yet, but I've already bought them two things. I couldn't help it, I just liked the stuff and they're things that any knitter would like (I think). And like someone else said, if I don't think they'll like it, I'll keep it!

Hi y'all! I've been rather quiet, but I'm here! School has kept me so doggone busy, that I had to catch up on all of the posts!

Since I'm a first-time swapper, I appreciate all of the good ideas. Question, though. How do you send an email if your email name matches your KH name, and you don't want to be identified?

I want to let my partner know that a messenger delivered her name to my door today! :happydance:

Now I'll have to put on my thinking cap...

You can set up a bogus email on yahoo or gmail and only use it for swapping. That is what I did for the last one and I also have one for KH pm's. That way you can be super sneaky. Just don't sign you name like I nearly did last time.

I agree with the others. Astonh you have done a wonderful job. Look at all the excited people from all over this great land that are now planning and shopping and mailing and watching for the mailman. This actually has me more excited than Christmas this year. Wow, I admitted that out loud.... Once again, Astonh, thank you so much for all the time and care you have put into this wonderful event.

I know my swappee is and have learned about that person. Now I am planning a trip to the knitting store. Ohhhh I am so excited. This is going to be so much fun!!! Thank you! I have my swapee. Now after reading her responses to the questions I have lots of my own questions to ask, but I'm "hung up" on if I should stay secret or not. Being new to the board and not posting much, makes me think it wouldn't matter either way. But I do think I'll be sneaky with yall..;) This is so much fun!

knitncook
10-27-2007, 08:42 AM
As for just round robin matching or the other methods knitncook mentioned, the problem arises in that you have people willing to ship, within each price category, to different locations or not open to shipping to certain areas. Additionally, you have the whole allergies thing to work around AND I added the extra component (which hasn't proven to be difficult on this swap like I thought it might due to all you guys' wonderful flexibility) of being able to be holiday specific if you wanted. Just lots of little things that have to be carefully matched so everyone is getting the best possible match.

Please know I wasn't criticising and I am sure I over simplified it. I forgot about all the allergy issues and foreign post offices and all the other variables. I'm only patiently waiting for my partner because I can't be here today clicking refresh 100 times a minute since we are off to go "play" medieval (http://www.sca.org) today.

stirsmommy
10-27-2007, 09:24 AM
Now that we are starting to get our partners names we better start looking at our spam and checking for pm's so we don't miss a message from our partners. I know I nearly missed a message from my partner in the last swap because I didn't recognize the email. That would have been awful for me and worse for my swapper who would have wondered why I didn't write back. Oh and another tip is try to remember your secret identity. I had to reset the password on mine last time because I had made it to difficult for myself.:aww: Now it is second nature I just have to check that email site.
I am so excited to see how much fun everyone is already having. Great job astonH!
