Hi all. I would like to make a really cool hat (knitted, not crochetted) for a male friend of mine. He is very masculine, but also very stylish (heterosexual), and has a whimsical side too. So something really cool (and/or a little fun or silly might be ok) that he'd love to wear. Any suggestions??!?
TIA!
Sirka

Check out the Knitty hat archive (http://knitty.com/archiveHEADS.html); lots of patterns there.

Jan in Ca beat me to it:-). I was going to suggest knittingpatterncentral.com. What a great site! Also, one of my favorite hat patters is a freebie from the Coats and Clark site-- their Gotcha Covered #1 (number 2 is for crochet). I use it constantly. It's a very simple hat-- ribbed brim which folds back onto the crown which is in stockinette stitch. But you can jazz it up by choosing which yarn you use or adding imbellishments.

I've always liked this pattern from Marnie's website...

But if you're looking for something challenging and funky, I would look for the book Hats On (http://www.amazon.com/Hats-Charlene-Schurch/dp/0892724358/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-0795632-9647941?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1192162691&sr=8-1) by Charlene Schurch. You may be able to find it at your local library. But its got almost every kind of hat you could ever want to knit in there.
