Anyone know where I can get Portuguese knitting needles? They have hooks like crochet on the ends and my mom would really like some for Christmas.

See here on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p1nIVmZHWbc&mode=related&search=) if you don't understand what I'm talking about.

So far this is the only place that I've found that sells them.

http://www.lacis.com/catalog/data/n_knitting.html

They are the Hook / Point Knitting Needles.

I don't crochet but..... don't those look just like crochet hooks....is the only difference that the shaft of a knitting needle is longer?

I'm pretty sure this (http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat3059&PRODID=prd27713&source=search) is what you are looking for.

e-bay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Annies-Attic-Easy-Tunisian-Hooks-size-L-M-N-P_W0QQitemZ130162882544QQihZ003QQcategoryZ28140QQc mdZViewItem)

More e-bay (http://stores.ebay.com/Love-N-Stuff-Craft-Supplies_Crochet-Hooks_Tunisian-Hooks_W0QQfsubZ2224261)

They are called afghan hooks or Tunisian hooks. They are long crochet hooks with a backing like a knitting needle.

I'm not familiar with afghan hooks, but these needles (unlike what I could see of the ones on ebay above) have a knitting point on one end and a hook on the other and are long like knitting needles.

Addi turbo makes "croneedle", one end with a crochet hook and the other with a knitting needle end. I found them online at

UNLESS you mean circular crochet needles...they have them too, I believe.

wow I just took the time to look at two of the YouTube clips on Portugese knitting

I think you want the Silvalume Susan Bates circular crochet things( not sure whether to call them hooks or needles)

I saw them here:

http://www.crochetnmore.com/123crochetsupplies.htm
and on Joann's I think

Let me know if you find them, if these are what is needed for Portugese knitting. I am intrigued.

I remember coming across that youtube video, and also a blog entry somewhere about the hooked needles and have also had my eyes out for them.

I just did a quick google search and found this yahoo group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/knitting_with_crochethook/

They have a picture of the portuguese needles and they look like the ones at the lacis site.

Totally my .02: I think that the portuguese knitting needles are made to be worked like double points, since the lacis site sells each size in packs of 4 or 5. Knitting continental style, you wouldn't have to pick the yarn, only hook it and bring it through, making the motions simpler and faster, and if there's a hook on one end and a needle tip on the other, the hook wouldn't get in the way when working circular items, only when working back and forth.

Not sure why anyone would want to purchase these needles with hooks to Portuguese knit as you can use regular needles to do this style. But if you still want to purchase I would suggest you go to the Denise interchangeable crochet hooks...
