I found a chart that may or may not help you.

I think I read once that DK (double knitting weight) was called this because it is double the thickness of fingering weight.

It's a British weight-- in-between American sports and worsted, but leaning slightly more towards worsted. (DK is 8-pkly and worsted is 10-ply, in older British terms.) If you're asking because you saw it recommended for a pattern, you can find it (sometimes listed in full as Double Knitting), or use worsted weight and just adust your needle size to make the guage work.

ok thank you both i was just looking at yarn.com today and they have a very cheap acryl yarn in dk weight(i think it was 2 or 3$) so i was thinking if i could use it for sweaters and such:)

Absolutely, you can! As I mentioned before, just check your guage, as you may need to adjust your needle size a bit to make it work. But the difference in DK and American worsted isn't a lot.
