I just made some socks out of Knitpicks Felici. It was very nice and I could use size 3 needles- much better than my first pair on size 1's. It takes 2 skeins for one pair of socks.

I have some Tofutsies (Soutwest Trading Company) next to try. Everyone here was raving about it. It has chitin in it- chitin is in the shells of crabs and shrimp which makes it naturally antibacterial.

If you're looking for wool or wool-blend, I'd go to patternworks.com. They have loads of sock yarn, all very good quality. If you need to use something non-wool, I'd look at the "fingering yarn" at kpixie.com (hemp/cotton, soy) or yarnmarket.com (corn, soy, bamboo).

Check out the hand dyes at Knitivity.com (http://knitivity.com). Ray's got some gorgeous yarns and new ones added all the time.

I just finished making a pair of socks and asked the same question at my lys and the reply was you can use any yarn you want as long as you get the gauge. I like real soft yarn and cashmere is out of my price range at the moment. Caron Simply Soft is real soft and I am going to use it for my next pair of socks which will be a gift to my youngest son who wants a wash in the machine and throw in the dryer pair of socks. It is up to you!:woot:

The folks at mathwizard's LYS did give accurate and useful advice, with one caveat: many sock patterns are intended for a very fine guage, like 7 - 9 sts per inch. If you use thicker yarns and very thin needles, you can still make guage, but the fabric will be very dense and stiff, not to mention harder to knit because of how tight your stitches will be.

My current pair is out of Colinette Jitterbug, and I must say I am LOVING it!! The colors are out of this world, and the sock is knitting up very nicely.

I have used lots of others though, some handpainted stuff I got at Montpelier, and some Austermann. I am a sock yarn fiend, so I buy a lot of it:aww:

I got to wondering the other day - why is sock yarn so darn expensive? I just can't justify spending $20+ on one hank of yarn that will only yield one pair of socks. I have actually looked into Knitpicks Bare superwash Merino. I am thinking about dyeing my own colorway. :)
