View Full Version : Give the same knitted gift?

Hi!
I have been knitting up my Christmas gifts and have run
into a bit of a question. I came up with a design for
cabled wrist warmers to make for all the girls in the family and
figured it would be fine if they were all the same design and
make them special to each person by using their favorite
color. I found out today that both my SIL have the same
favorite color (pink) and the yarn I am using has only one shade of pink. I don't want to change yarns as that will
require more swatching and I don't want to change the
cable pattern I am using as it took some time to get it all
worked out. Would it be weird to give them identical
wrist warmers for their Christmas present? I just can't
decide and would love some opinions....:)

I don't think so-- but, it would depend on other factors: their ages, do they hang out together a lot? (if so, they might look like twins :D), are they 'go with the flow' type of people?

Could you.. add something a bit different to one? Is there another color that you are using for another one.. that is in a color that would go well w/ the pink that you are using? IF so.. on one you could edge it in the 'accent color?'

Myself.. I could care less about these things.. sometimes my friends and I buy the exact same thing-- because we don't live next door to each other- and my friends don't stay living where I live for years anyway (since, I live overseas-- most friends or I will move elsewhere w/in 2 years or so)

Good luck on whatever you decide.

Or how about going ahead with it and including a cute note with it? Something along the lines of, since both of you both love pink and this yarn was perfect, you're getting identical presents this year. At least there won't be any fighting over who got the better ones, etc.

I would edge each in a different color. Or maybe just up at the top of the wrist (that piece closest to the elbows, not the fingers)? Individualize based on the colors they usually wear or the color of their eyes.

It's a very sweet and thoughtful gesture!

Ok thanks for the replies! I hadn't thought of doing a
contrast edging...that would probably work. I'm almost
finished with the first pair so they will just be solid pink.
Maybe I can make a pink and white striped pair and
let them fight it out? :teehee: I had hoped that if anyone
had a color in common it would be blue as this yarn I'm
using has every shade of blue imaginable...and only one
pink haha oh well... I'll do either the edging or make them
stripey!

Thanks..

if you are almost finished, another idea is to embellish them with different colors... maybe their initial, or a small simple design?

this link shows you how to do it, it's really easy.

good luck!

Duplicate stitch is a good idea but these are cabled
wristwarmers so don't think that will work!
Thanks for the idea though :) I just went and
got some white yarn in the same line as the pink and am
going to make a pink and white striped pair and I already
have a finished solid pair....so now to decide who gets
which!

maybe you could add one or two tiny? Swarski chrystals of different colors

Adding some crystals is an interesting idea as well! I have
no idea how to do it or which of my SIL would like something
sparkly but I'll have to keep this in mind for future projects.
Thanks for the suggestion!
