View Full Version : Afghans on large needles

So, my BF's mom asked me to knit an afghan for her mom for Christmas. I'm really excited to do this because I think she'll LOVE it, but I'm thinking since it's almost November I should probably use a pattern that calls for large needles. Does anyone have any cute patterns knit on at least a size 11 or so (preferably 13 or 15)? I have been looking online and found some okay ones, but nothing I fell in love with. I have knit a throw on size 50 needles and want to make something a little finer. Suggestions?
This one is done on sz 11 needles.
this one is done on size 13 needles but it's got a lot of cabling

http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/zigzag-afghan.html Done in strips, but could do all one piece & use any needle size/yarn weight you want for this one.

I made one from Creative Knitting Magazine (an issue from Fall 2006) which was done with super bulky yarn on size 13s. It knit up quickly AND was machine washable.

Have you ever used Joann Fabric's Speedstix? I haven't so I'm not sure how good they'll be, but they're a size 50  Most of the patterns call for you to knit them with 2-4 strands at a time.
Hope that helps!! With size 50's an afghan should knit up in no time!:yay:

Yes, I think I said in my post that I have knit the Fast Finish throw on size 50's. I would knit with them again, but I want this afghan to look more delicate since it is for my DBF's grandma. The size 50s make a stretchy fabric that's a bit holey and I knit with 4 strands. It was fun, but not the look I'm going for.
cftwo, I wonder if I can find the pattern since it's from 2006? I couldn't find a link on the site for previous issues. I think I'm going to have to do some digging to find a pattern, I've looked at Lion Brand and some other sites, but I'm just not sure yet. She also wants it in light pink and light blue, which only seems to be the baby yarns! Oh well, I'll figure it out...I'm still open to suggestions!
