I am http://twopeasinabucket.kaboose.com/images/icons/blush.gif to admit how long this has been a WIP! I found this pattern in a magazine at work years ago (okay the mag has a date of 1976!) when I was still in college!!! I bought yarn that I could afford and made a couple of the squares and then just dropped it.

Well, I decided I should actually finish it this year. The yarn, Caron Dazzle-Aire is not even made anymore! My eyes can not even read the tiny print in the pattern anymore, so I had to scan it and enlarge it.

I had originally intended it to be a gift for my little sister who was 7 or 8 at the time.

Well, tomorrow is HER dd's 5th birthday and I am giving it to my niece.

After completing the squares and stitching them together, I added a hand sewn in fleece backing. Then I worked the edge.

Here are photos of my 31 year old WIP!

I hope that it is okay I post this here. It is actually crochet!

What a fortunate little girl! She'll love it, I'm sure.

I had to laugh though as I started something similar when I was in college in the 70's, and it's in my brother's garage.

Gorgeous and love your attn to detail. Beautifully done! Given the resurgence of the 70s ('all things old are new') this actually looks quite current. ;)

OMG!! 31 Years??? That is really something, I hope I can finish some of my WIPs even though they're not that old...well, then again?! Was there a difference in the colors of the yarn? I mean those squares you had already done and the yarn that wasn't worked yet?

It's beautiful. Does your sister know the story behind it? If so, it is going to mean so much more to her that you finished it for her daughter. I have something similar that my mother made for me in 1976. It is afghan sized and has a fringe on it, but otherwise a very similar pattern. My mother may be in heaven, but her crafts are all over my house and remind me of her daily. My Christmas tree only has hand made ornaments on it each year, those that Mom made for me in about 1985 or so. They are treasures, just like your work is...

That afghan is truly 31 years worth of work. It is beautiful, the fleece on the back is perfectly applied and makes it look so professional. What an immaculately perfect gift.:)

"Was there a difference in the colors of the yarn? I mean those squares you had already done and the yarn that wasn't worked yet?"

No, there was not. It was all original yarn purchased years ago and stored together. Except for a bit of the white. I actually bought a bunch of white skeins of the Caron Dazzle-aire a few years ago from a clearance bin at Michaels. I'm sure glad I did!

I had made 2 of the 48 squares years ago and I don't know why I never kept at it. Really, that is not like me to leave a work unfinished.

The challenge was locating the pattern again! Luckily, I had the magazine in a stash of old patterns. I did have to go out and buy a new hook in the size needed as I could not find the other one.
