Okay, again with my questions , I am going to start another project for my daughter . she loves this jacket https://www.elann.com/ShowFreePattern.asp?Id=259024 (https://www.elann.com/ShowFreePattern.asp?Id=259024). I am reading thru the pattern : (again this is a free pattern online)
Basic pattern:
Number of sts multiple of 6 + 3 + edge sts. Work foll chart. On return rows P sts and yo's. Rep rows 1 - 4.
so there is a chart and i think it should be this when it's written:
Row 1: K3, yo, slip 1 knitwise, K2 tog, pass slipped st over,
Row 2: Purl
Row 3: yo, slip 1 knitwise, K2 tog, pass slipped st over,yo K3
Row 4: Purl
My question is what is the edge st ?? and on the return row which is the even row is that all purl across ???
 sometimes when I read these things i just want to :wall:

The edge stitch is probably not on the chart, but it seems to be included in the number that you cast on. It's just for ease of seaming. With the weight of the yarn, I think I'd slip the first stitch as if to purl and knit the last stitch every row.

The back of the chart IS purled all the way across.

okay Ingrid .. i have done a few rows of this pattern but im seeing that it's kinda rolling up .. I have done a long tail cast on .. and it's says:
cast on 59 sts , p1 return row .. meaning i cast on and then purl accross right .. but i'ts not totally curling .. i was thinking maybe i sshould do a garter sts border for maybe 4 rows then start my pattern what do you think ??

If you've worked some of the lace pattern and it's curling, then by all means do a garter border. You can do the same on the sleeves, too. It does bug me when photos show things looking perfect as if they got there by magic. Who knows? They could have steamed the sweater 2 minutes before.

I know kinda frustrating sometimes . hee hee .. thankyou so much . do you think 4 rows of garter is good enought .. also after i do that should i do the purl row then start with the pattern or just go straight to the pattern ..

I think the purl row at the beginning of the original pattern is just to line up the cast on a certain way in relation to the rest. You shouldn't have to do it after the garter. With that size yarn and needles, 4 should be plenty.
