I am wanting to make my brother a hat since he shaved off all of his hair. He has started the chemo and he did not want his hair to fall out in chunks. So I want to make him a basic hat to wear, I found a pattern at http://www.hjsstudio.com/hat.html, found a good cotton blend at Knitpicks however the pattern does not really state what size needles to use. This is my problem, it just says to choose a needle size that you like to use with the yarn that you will use. I picked out Shine Worsted for the size (worsted) and they have black available. KP says that it is "4.5 - 5 sts=1" on #6-9 needles" but the person who wrote the instructions says she likes to use smaller needles, US 4 for worsted weight but she also knits loosely.

I just don't know!:wall: Am I over thinking this?

First of all, you have to knit a swatch, maybe 2 or 3. Try the needle in the middle of the range first. Consider the results. Will the hat look good if you knit that yarn on those needles? Can you sustain a comfortable tension as you knit with them?
