I'm using Getting Started Knitting Socks, and I've seen the suggestion several places to use a larger size needle for the upper leg and a smaller size for the lower leg and foot.
So how do you know when to change needle sizes? :??

are you making the socks for your self?

if so, try them on!

you have to be gentle, but its not hard to slip on socks --while still on the needles and see how they fit!

(if making for someone else (kids/spouse/partner.) do the same thing (only you hold the knitting!)

if they are pleasently snug.. you are fine.. if they are a little loose, go down a needle size (socks should fit like wet t-shirts.. clingy, but not uncomfortably tight!)

In this pattern it has you to change to the smaller needles 4" from the top of the cuff. this pattern is in the Favorite Socks Book from Interweave.
