All sock patterns say... "careful not to twist stitches" as you join in the round... so what does it actually do? What if I *want* to twist em?

It doesn't mean twisting individual stitches, it means to be careful that the line of stitches doesn't get twisted around your needles so that some are at the top of the needle and some at the bottom... because if you join the round with the line of stitches twisted around the needles, you won't be able to knit a tube. I hope that makes sense... I'm having trouble describing what I mean.

If you twist your cast on row after the first knit round, you'll unwittingly create a Mobius and you'll never be able to get your "tube" to be the right side out/in. Trust me, you don't want this to happen unless it's on purpose for a wrap or scarf.

so you would get like a mobius thingy-bob if you twist?Yup, it was on an episode of Knitty Gritty. See it here (http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/shows_dkng/episode/0,2046,DIY_18180_43402,00.html).

Very cool. I can't wait to make a mobius scarf.

My dd did that with a purse she was trying to make by just using the needles on the cables. She couldn't figure out where it got twisted and would not believe me that it happened in the first row. Poor kid never did finish that purse.

If you actually managed to knit a tube with a twisted join the universe as we know it would cease to exist.

Hmm, good information to know. If I can get over my fear of tackling circular needles, I shall definitely remember this. Avoiding any discouraging mistakes will make the process of learning to knit a lot more fun for me!:frog:
