Can a pattern for a hat on a circular needle be converted to tow needles by using the same amount of stitches? I'm not fond of circular needles and am making hats for kids at our school that come without warm things to wear. Also can the came be done with mittens? Thank you

There are patterns for hats and mitts on 2 needles. Check out www.knittingpatterncentral.com (http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com) .
To convert an in-the-round pattern to straights, you can add a couple of stitches for seaming and then follow the pattern except you have to reverse the order of the stitches on the wrong side rows, as well as changing from knit to purl and vice-versa.
