the other day i saw the trailer for National Treasure: Book of Secrets (http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/nationaltreasurebookofsecrets/trailer/nt2_trailer_medium.html). in it, Diane Kruger wears a knit, ribbed hat. i really want to knit one to wear to see the movie when it comes out. (yes, i know i'm a dork. :teehee:) i absolutely l:heart:ved the first movie and am really excited about this one, and i want to combine my love of knitting and American history (in a strange sort of way). it looks like it's knit with a heavier weight (possibly aran or bulky?). i've looked on ravelry and the closest pattern i've found is the ribbed watch cap (http://www.vintageknits.com/hat.html) from vintage knits. the picture on ravelry looks more like what i want than the one in the link, but it's still not right. i'm thinking the yarn isn't heavy enough.

can enough of you more experienced knitters tell me what kind of ribbing pattern/yarn weight combo that is?

i know my questions are always kind of long, but i figure too many details are better than not enough. that way, you know exactly what i'm talking about.

it looks a bit like the knit I made for my son, I did it holding 2 worsted weight yarns together (one blue, one green) it looks like this:

Except, that I think hers is k2 p1 ribbing instead of k2 p2 like mine.

i think you're right about the ribbing. i've got the trailer paused on my computer and there's a really great shot towards the end. the hat looks kind of like a hershey's kiss with a not-so-pointy top. the ribs are interesting, though. it looks like two ribs go all the way up the front of the hat, and the others come up and meet it. gee, i really wish i knew how to do screen captures. i just took a pic with my camera. i'll see how it comes out.

Watched the trailer again - and her hat has different decreases than mine too - the decreases at the crown most closely match this noro ribbed hat (http://spiralsfreepatterns.blogspot.com/2005/12/ribbed-noro-hat.html)

you beat me to it! :teehee:
i've got one of the front. it shows the shape and those two ribs really well. it's just not as clear as yours.

i just realized how well yours shows the decreases. i may have to knit up the footy hat to see how close it comes. thank goodness i have almost a month.

how would you achieve the, um, "road" up the front of the hat?

Do you mean the ribs that continue to the top? There are some on the side on the pic I grabbed too - if you look at the footy hat, it also has ribs that go all the way up, while the others stop along that one.

okay. i'll have to look at it again. hat's sure do look different when they're not on a person's head! :teehee:

i think i see it now. gee, it would be nice to see it rounded out on a head! looks like i really will have to make it.

i've been working on a hat for my brother in 2x1 ribbing and i realized something. if the hat in the movie was 2x1, the part that folds up (the underside) would look different from the rest of the hat. :?? if it's 2x2, would using a heavier yarn sort of keep the ribs closer together (squooshing the purls), therefore making it look like 2x1?

Oh, yeah, it must be 2x2 to get the cuff to look the same......Actually, I wonder if it is just a bit big on her, therefore not very stretched out? When I knit 2x2, it seems that it looks that way, until you stretch it over something. I really think now that the footy pattern might be 100% the way to go - plus it looks easy ;) :P

Oh, and be sure to post pics after you finish it!

ONE more thing........check out footy on ravelry! (http://www.ravelry.com/projects/StDebb/mens-footy-hat)

i can't believe i didn't think to look for it on ravelry! thanks! i think you're right about it not being stretched out. they may have used a thicker yarn, too. maybe it's me, but it just looks a little bulkier than worsted.
