I got a great idea from a previous post on KH...I was looking for the best ball winder and swifter, and someone suggested using a "spinning lampshade" instead of a swifter..it works so well, I am not buying a swifter at this time..There was no tangling, and I used the ball winding method on Amy's KH video.. it was so great cause I bought some Malabrigo on sale and made a mess of the first ball trying to wind it from the back of a chair..I thought it was worth repeating... just loosen the screw that tightens the lampshade on the lamp and put the yarn over it and pull.. the lampshade I used was fatter at the bottom so it doesn't slip off (upside down cone shape)...

Here's a nice home made (http://www.folkcatart.com/blogs/jen/?p=742) swift!

I will be asking for tinker toys from Santa!! I just would rather spend my $$ on yarn or knitting books than a swifter.. just me.. I might change my mind later, but storage is a problem also...so the tinker toy idea sounds great...thanks much!!

Instead of spending the money on a swift, I use a round laundry basket turned upside down on the floor. It has the same lampshade/cone shape, but it dosen't spin. that dosen't matter though because my ball winder is up high on my desk. no need for it to spin as the yarn goes up instead of to the side.

that is a great idea too.. i needed to think about it for awhile, but I get it..you are pulling up on the yarn so it doesn't need to spin.. but doesn't it have trouble staying down when you get toward the end and the weight is lighter?

I finally broke down and bought a swift from Etsy. My mom and another knitting friend both really like it. Before that, I draped the hank over my knees and wound the ball from there.

That looks great and like a lot of fun just to play with - aren't tinkertoys and legos fun to play with? I just wish my ds had some - he has the legos but they won't help.
