View Full Version : Help me find (or design) my perfect hoodie pattern!

(Sorry for the novel, guys, I have a very specific idea of what I want to knit and I'm hoping someone can help)

I'm itching to make a hoodie out of Knitpicks Andean Silk (in Hyacinth). As soon as I knit with my first skein of this yarn, it told me what it wanted to be: A warm, cozy hoodie. With cables.

Here's what it looks like: A pullover hoodie (no zip or buttons down the front), with a kangaroo pocket, with a hood of course, and a few cables down the front. Not a whole lot of cables, just two or three. I'd like it mostly done in the round with minimal seaming.

I'd call myself an advanced beginner, I've tackled most things (socks, cables, Fair Isle, DPNs, circs, etc) but I just don't have a lot of experience. I haven't yet completed a sweater (though I've done a tank top before, and I'm working on Cherie Amour right now).

I've looked through all the popular hoodie patterns: Central Park Hoodie (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/central-park-hoodie) (like), Mariah (http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/PATTmariah.html) from Knitty (like), Rogue (http://www.girlfromauntie.com/patterns/shop/rogue/detail.php) (hate the cables on the hood), but they all have zippers or buttons going down the front. I'd like one solid piece, not a jacket or cardigan.
Right now my top choices are BPT (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall03/PATTbpt.html) or Wicked (http://www.zephyrstyle.com/catalog/item.cfm/2367447/3974522) (which I love, love, LOVE), but both of those would require modifications. Like I said I haven't finished a sweater yet and I don't feel comfortable making these mods on my own.

So what I'm looking for is either a perfect hoodie pattern that I've somehow missed, or help on how to modify one of these patterns I've mentioned: to change a cardigan into a sweater with one solid front, to add a hood to a sweater, or some guidelines about how much cables pull in so I could take a plain hoodie pattern and add some cables to it.

Thanks so much!

To make it a pullover hoodie, just knit the front like the back to the point you want the neck opening then follow an open front version for the neck shaping.

I think you might be describing the Wonderful Wallaby. There are no cables, but I don't see why you couldn't add them.

If you search the forum you will probably come across some photos. And here's some links to photos I found on Google images to see if it's what you mean.

If you're on Ravelry there are dozens of pictures and comments.
