Hi,
I have been having trouble with my wrist for the past year and next week I am getting an EMG. I was just wondering if anyone else had one done befor ? What was it like ? Does it hurt ? Will I be able to knot/type on the keyboard on the same day ?
Thanks

hi there! I had one about 7 years ago. I was having pain and numbness in my hand. the EMG tests each nerve in the arm/hand to see where the nerve is being blocked by inflammation, injury or something else. they send a small electrical pulse through the nerve, to a detector at a different place, to see how the current flows.

Did you doctor give you any information about it? I was told to take some advil before going in, and to bring ice packs with me for when it was over (and more painkillers). I was sore the rest of the day, and while I can't specifically remember, I doubt I was on the computer that day at all. it wasn't pleasant, but it gave us valuable information about why my hand was numb.
here are a couple reputable sources for online medical information:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003929.htm

http://www.stjohnsmercy.org/healthinfo/test/neuro/TP012.asp

http://www.hss.edu/conditions_14416.asp

(use care when researching health conditions on the 'net- quacks and bad info are everywhere. I stick to sites like NIH, the Mayo Clinic, and sometimes WebMD....)

good luck!

As marykz has already said, the EMG is not a pleasant test. I had one on my leg and it was pretty unconfortable but not intolerable. The impulses they send are fast and it should be over quickly. You may be sore.

Good luck.

ditto - discomfort, a little painful but tolerable - I went back to work
