I'm attempting to make socks but i'm being cheap and i don't want to spend too much money on the more expensive sock yarns. Are there any alternatives? any suggestions? thanks a billion

Knit Picks (http://www.knitpicks.com) has excellent prices for good sock yarns.

Have you looked at Silver's Tutorial (http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Start.htm)? Rather than starting with sock yarn to begin your socks, she starts with a wide range of yarns including sport, dk and worsted. Worsted is a great way to learn basic sock construction if you have never knit on DPN's. And as Lady B said, look at Knit Picks for a wide range of less expensive yarns. Then when you are good and addicted we will send you to the $25 a 50g skein a yarn (I mean you do deserve a pair of $50 socks, right?) :D

I agree with knitncook about starting out. Using any heavier weight yarn makes learning easier. They can be house socks.

That being said.. you can use any yarn for socks. However, sock yarn almost always has some nylon or other type of material to build strength into the yarn so wear better.
