For a really quick and thick one, try the same pattern with 2 strands of yarn and size 12 or 13 needles.

I just made one the other day for my MIL - Lion Brand Wool Ease thick & quick and size 15 needles, cast on 18 stitches, P2 - K2 - P2 - K6 - P2 - K2- P2, then I did C2F and C6F every 7th row - it's quite beautiful and it took just a couple of evenings in front of the tv.
