Hey guys - I know some of you are gamers so know there must be someone out there who'll appreciate this! I've been working on it for a while now but Christmas knitting took over so it only got finished on Boxing Day : the Weighted Companion Cube!
Here's the pics - it's still not perfect but I like it a lot - there's a bigger explanation on my blog :-)

COMPANION CUBE. I just had a Portalgasm. And then died and went to Portal heaven. And was resurrected via portal. Oh my god.
When you post this pattern, I will explo---I mean, start knitting it immediately. <3<3<3<3

Portal is one of the best games I've ever played, if not *the* best. While it makes a great puzzle game, the real joy is the AI guide, GLADOS. She is a lunatic AI designed to guide you through the levels, and eventually goes mad and tries to kill you. The kind of things she comes out with are fantastic, and all in this sweet, innocent, computery voice. They got a fantastic voice actress and opera singer to do the part. Some gems :
"Please note, we have added a consequence for failure. Any contact with the chamber floor will result in an unsatisfactory mark on your official testing record, followed by death. Good luck."
"Cake, and grief counseling will be available at the conclusion of the test. Thank you for helping us help you help us all."
"Well done, android. The Enrichment Center once again reminds you that android hell is a real place where you will be sent at the first sign of defiance."
"The Enrichment Center is required to remind you that you will be baked, and then there will be cake."
"The Enrichment Center promises to always provide safe testing environments. In dangerous testing environments, the Enrichment Center promises to always provide useful advice. For instance, the floor here will kill you. Try to avoid it."
And, regarding the companion cube :
"The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube cannot speak. In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice."
"While it has been a faithful companion, your companion cube cannot accompany you through the rest of the test. If it could talk - and the Enrichment Center takes this opportunity to remind you that it cannot - it would tell you to go on without it because it would rather die in a fire than become a burden to you."
It's the darkest, funniest game I've ever played. If you're really interested, look up the song 'Still Alive' on youtube, it plays at the end of the game.
Cake is a recurring theme in Portal as well, and for my friend Jan's birthday I decorated a cake to look like the one at the end of the game. You eventually get to these rooms where the walls have, scrawled in blood, 'the cake is a lie'. It is now a standard gamer saying *grin*

If at first you don't succeed, you fail. ;D
You made the cake? That's so funny! Ironically, I've seen a picture on google images of someone who made a giant cake that looks like the companion cube, so I guess you can have your cube and eat it too. :P
