View Full Version : Mistake in pattern maybe?

I am making a cardigan all in rib.

I am just starting the left front piece. I wonder if there is a mistake in the pattern. It goes like this:
Cast on 20 sts
Row 1 (WS) p2, *k1, p1* to end.
Row 2 (RS) - *k1,p1 to last 2st before end, yo, k2.
Repeat these 2 rows 30 times more - 50 sts.
(and then you are supposed to work even in rib until meas...and so on)

So when I have done the first 2 rows and start with the 2 purls I end up with the YO I made from last row and the next one is a knit. If they want me to always do 2 purls and then k1, p1 I am gonna be off track with the rib.
Can there be a mistake? Am I supposed do knit the last rows YO and have 2p and then 2k every other time...?
I hope I am not misunderstanding the pattern.

I have restarted several times.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think the pattern is correct as far as it is, but they really should have stated how to work into the ribbing, the extra yo stitches added.
This is how I would do it.
Row 1 (WS) p2, *k1, p1* to end.
Row 2 (RS) - *k1,p1 to last 2st before end, yo, k2.
Row 3 (WS) P3 * k1, p1 * to end.
Row 4 same as Row 2.
Repeat these 4 rows until you have 50 sts.

Is the YO a buttonhole or just an increase? If it's a buttonhole, you wouldn't want it on every other row, would you? If it's an increase, you'd need to adjust stitches on the row after that row, keep adding one more purl st at the beginning of the row before you go into the rib. What does the picture look like?

It is an increase.
Cardigan looks like this:

So it is the edge of the fronts. You later add on ribbing to it when you have sewn the pieces together.

Niiiiice! Okay, keep the 2 edge sts in stockinette, add the YO where indicated and just incorporate the new stitch into the rib pattern.

So the edge would look something like this (I have to add .. to make it look even):

...ssOkpkpk
..sspkpkpk
.ssOpkpkpk
sskpkpkpkp

See how the row after the YO you would either knit or purl it depending on where the rib pattern is.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this. Not been at home.

Well the trouble is I end up with either three purls or 2 purls & 2 knits. Should I go for 3 purls or 2p & 2k ?

Jints suggested the 3 purls. I am so new to this that I can't tell what will look the best.

For row 3, do P3, k2, p2, etc. However, on row 5, it'll be p4, k2, p2, and on row 7, do p2, k1, p2, k2, p2. See how you're adding the extra stitch into the ribbing pattern?

If you aren't sure try both and see.
Basically the 2 St's on the end are a border and always stay the same. everything else including the new YO St's is to be part of the k1, p1 rib pattern.
Here is another way to look at it.
Same instructions worded dfferently.
Row 1 (WS) p2, *k1, p1* to end.
Row 2 (RS) - *k1, p1 to last 2st before end, yo, k2.
Row 3 (WS) p2, * p1, k1 * to end.
Row 4 same as Row 2.
Repeat these 4 rows until you have 50 sts.

Hmm.. I am trying to think real hard here.
(The sweater is in a k1, p1 rib. )

I think I need to sit down and knit it to get this. I'll be back. ;o)

Oh sorry, forgot it was k1,p1. You do have to work the extra stitch in on the odd rows. So here's my revision (with 1x1 rib) -
row 3, P3, k1, p1, k1, p1
row 5, p2, k1, p1, k1, p1
row 7, p3, k1, p1, k1, p1

Which is pretty much as jints had it figured out.

Ok, then we all agree. ;o) Thank you both so much for helping me! Now I can move on with my cardigan.
