I have decided to appeal to all of you, in case you know of anyone that can help with this.

I am running out of US size 8, 9, and 10 circular knitting needles (5, 5.5 and 6 mm) for our Oddball projects. We are using more than 20 pairs in all the different projects right now. They need to be inexpensive, and sturdy. At least 21 inches long, preferably 29 or more inches (50-80cm).

Also, if you know of anyone that would like to help with paying postage for some of our knitters, let me know. I have occasionally sent small amounts through paypal to our knitters that need help with postage. But, it gets expensive sometimes! :help:

What are those sizes in mm? :??

Is there a specific brand you're looking for or prefer to work with?

My local Michael's is having a big sale this week and I think I saved one of their coupons.

Do you need postage help for the squares after you knit them together? I can send a few dollars to help out. I'll see what needles I have because I know I have some I don't use anymore.

suzeeq

That would be 5, 5.5 and 6 mm in metric DQ. Oh and the lengths would be 50-80cm or longer.

Thanks for answering DQ's question, suzeeq. :)

Is there a specific brand you're looking for or prefer to work with?
We use ANY brand. I usually look for old used needles on eBay, and buy a bunch of them. But, I've gone through a lot, and only have 1 needle left. :pout: (Some knitters don't really like the needle on our project, so they switch to their own needle, and then put our needle back on when they are finished.)

By the way, a few of our projects have gotten lost in the mail, so we lost those needles. :verysad:

Thanks Jan!
The postage help is sporadic, depending on how much it costs for mailing the Oddball Blankets. Some knitters end up having to pay more than we planned. For example, one package that went to another country ended up costing over 30 dollars!

I haven't decided yet about how the "Many Colors" blankets will be given. I may end up delivering them in person to a charity in my state. I'll let you know.

I would be happy to send you some needles. I will do some shopping this weekend and mail them out as soon as possible. Your efforts to give so much to so many folks out there certainly deserves our attention.

Sandy I am on the hunt. I heard from a friend that one of our local thrift stores has a ton of knitting needles. I'll let you know if I find anything that will work. I'm also looking through my stash but I don't have a ton of circs. If we were using straights that would be another story all together!

25 sets of circular knitting needles :cheering:
and almost 200 dollars for postage! :woohoo:

We are starting a new project now, making blankets for preemie babies. So, now we need size US 6 (4 mm) circular needles. They need to be at least 21 inches (53 cm) long. I have a few to get by for now, but I have a feeling we'll be needing more.

I'm going to check on eBay now, to see what I can find.

Today, I had to use some of the money that was donated for postage and supplies for our Oddball Projects.

So, I decided to give a full report on how I've used the money:

So far, I have received $220 in donations! :cheering:
Thank you all SO MUCH for your help!

I have spent $149 on postage and supplies as follows:

eBay purchase $6.78 - 3 Bryspun Circular Needles (9-24, 10-24, 10-29)
Postage 1-22-08 $1.98 - Patriotic Baby Blanket to Suziehomemaker
Postage 1-22-08 $4.60 - Neon Baby Blanket to Doodknitwit
Postage 1-22-08 $5.55 - Misty Blue Shawl to Losnana
Postage 1-22-08 $21.60 - Circus Baby Blanket to England
Postage 1-22-08 $27.60 - Lapghan #1 to Amy
Postage 1-22-08 $15.65 - Blanket #1 to Amy
Barnes/Noble 1/22/08 $1.66 - Horse Journal
Barnes/Noble 1/22/08 $1.66 - Owl Journal
AC Moore 2/14/08 $9.70 - 10 Journals at AC Moore (97 cents each)
AC Moore 2/14/08 $6.99 - Size 6 Circular Needle

Postage 2-14-08 $9.60 - Lapghan #2 to Karne
Postage 2-14-08 $9.75 - Magic Shawl to Abbily
Postage 2-14-08 $5.25 - Purple Paradise Baby Blanket to Foxyie
Postage 2-14-08 $16.70 - Blanket #5 to Tobinknit

I still have 71 dollars available, so things are going well! :)

I've been trying to find size 6 circulars on eBay, because I need them for our Preemie blankets. I haven't had any luck, because someone always outbids me at the last minute. :pout: I'm trying to be careful with buying them. I had to pay full price today for a size 6 needle, because I really need it. I'm planning on going to AC Moore again this Saturday to use a 50% off coupon to buy another one.

Thanks for the update. Your time and effort on all of these charity projects is greatly appreciated!!!!

I'm checking http://www.discontinuedbrandnameyarn.com (http://www.discontinuedbrandnameyarn.com/)($2.99 for most circs), they don't have any 6s long enough right now but they update their inventory pretty often.

I wonder if KP would be willing to donate any 6's...if we gave them the link to this thread...

Maybe we could call and ask to speak to a manager. Even donating one or two would be so helpful, and it would promote their product. We could include a flyer or a card explaining that KP donated the needles that would travel with the blanket.

I want to try my HL and see if they will donate...just haven't had time to go by yet with school (kicking my butt these last two weeks).

Oh, and thank you for the detailed accounting. I certainly trust you, but it is nice to see how the money is spent. It's also quite an eye opener to see how much postage costs.

You rock, my dear!

Wow Shandeh, you're so busy! I checked out the list of things you've posted--didn't see Angel Wings coming to me yet--right? It says on the Oddball blanket list that I'm waiting for it to arrive, but it's not on it's way yet, right? I'm wondering because my mom sent me something and I haven't seen it, and remember I have that mailperson who likes to throw!? (I did make eyecontact with her today though, so maybe I'll have things show up miraculously tomorrow!) Just wanted to check....

As these blankets start coming in.. I have a question..

How many blankets do you want me to donate at one time? I want to do what the group wants. Right now there are 3 blankets, and I Know several are almost finished, and headed this way.

Let me know what everyone thinks, I want to do what would be a group decision.

Thanks,

I went to my local Hobby Lobby today and inquired about a donation. The manager told me that these requests have to go through their corporate office, and he gave me their telephone number. I'll try to call them on Monday and see what they will do. This is not something I mind doing since I've been doing it for soccer for quite a number of years. If they don't want to or can't, they'll tell me. But it certainly is a worthy cause, thus worth the effort.

I'm also going to call KnitPicks on Monday.

Crossed Fingers

Oh, and I think that this is something that a small (meaning not franchise) LYS might be willing to donate for, if we gave them the website of the Oddball blankets. If I had one close to me, I'd inquire, but all we have are chain stores.

HollyP
02-16-2008, 09:14 PM

Thank you for the reminder! My kids have to go to school, and I have to work, so I totally forgot. I'll call on Tuesday.

As far as asking for donations, if it's something you believe in, it's easy to be sincere. I find that a lot of places want to help but are tied because of budget constraints. Every now and then, though, you get lucky.

Wow - that adds up so quickly! Do you think USPS, UPS or FedEx would give you a discount if you shipped all of your charity items through them? You would definitely qualify as a frequent customer.

I sent a package to my cousin in Iraq and the guys at UPS packed it up for me for free and gave me a good deal on the shipping.

That's a good idea! I'll go to the UPS office nearby, and show them what I have spent in the past two months. Maybe they can "make me an offer I can't refuse". :teehee:

I wonder how much I've spent on ALL the Oddball projects so far? I'll try to get all my receipts together, and hopefully have a report soon.

But, I'll probably have to wait until after Easter to do it. I'm so busy right now with church music.

I think it would be cool if we could get an account somewhere that all the Oddball Knitters could use. But, that's probably just a dream, since we're all over the place.

I never thought about that! That's a great idea! UPS is a national company so they might be able to do something for us since we're all over the country. National corporations have agreements with shipping companies so why can't we?
My only complaint with UPS is that sometimes they are more expensive than USPS. If they could give us a discount they might be able to win our business. We could warn them to "never underestimate the power of charity knitters" !

No need. I called my local UPS store and they said that we'd have to set up an account the the main office and bill everything to one credit card. Since that wouldn't work for us I checked out their charity section on the website. They are no longer accepting unsolicited requests for their charitible giving programs. Darn it!

Maybe the local store managers will give us discounts if we knit them something as a bribe . . . .

[Wow I'm posting alot today!]

Maybe we could help spread out the shipping costs to the rest of us if the last person of each blanket started a new blanket when they finished up. That way you're not starting a new one each time.

Well, it's not too bad right now.

Plus, I'm going to stick with baby blankets, shawls, and 12 inch squares for the "Many Colors" afghans from now on, which will make the shipping lower for everyone.

The large blankets are just too expensive to mail when they get bigger.

Plus, if something happens to one of our large blankets, it's just HEARTBREAKING! :pout: (Like our missing blanket #3) :verysad:

I like the idea of sticking to baby blankets. There are loads and loads of places for distribution to babies around the country. Our baby blankets seem to be the type of project that works up so quickly. And with fewer knitters per blanket, the blanket is less likely to get lost in transit. I would be happy to start any new blankets you desire. In the meantime, I will be on the lookout for more round needles in size 5, 6, or 7 tomorrow afternoon when I hit the local A.C. Moore.

Today, I went to Michaels and bought a few more things for the Oddball projects.

Caron Simply Soft was on sale, so I bought 3 skeins for our current blankets. Knitting needles were on sale too, and I found one size 6 circular! :woohoo:

I also grabbed 4 new journals to use for the blankets. Neat!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3271/2313318899_4dbbbca388.jpg

The yarn was $2.50 a skein. The needles were $3.74, and the journals were $1 each. I spent $15.24.

So, now, I have $6.76 left in the Oddball Fund.

And I just remembered that I recently won two auctions on eBay for more needles. I paid $12.00 for those auctions, so now my Oddball Fund is empty. Thank you all SO much for your help with needles and point protectors and journals and yarn and postage!!! :woohoo:

Today, I came home from teaching piano lessons, and saw that I have received more donations in my paypal account, to be used for our Oddball projects.
:cheering:

Thank you so much!!! I now have $40 available to use for postage! :)

We really needed it too. I'm sending 3 packages tomorrow, and will be sending 8 more in the next week.

I really think the USPS hates me. I tried to ship a package to day, and they couldn't take debit or credit cards. But, they waited till you got to the window to tell you! 15 out of 25 in line left.

I went to usps, and sent it out. I was so frustrated I wanted to scream.

But, it's on it's way. I sent 3 needles that can be used to further the wonder of the oddball baby blankets!

Today, I received a package from traceleighj! :)

I'll post a photo later, because I'm not feeling well today.

She sent 3 journals, 2 circular needles, and some money for postage! :)

She also sent a couple gifts for me! A skein of Peaches and Cream yarn, and a book of dishcloth patterns!

Thank you SO much for your help! :muah:

Today, I mailed two more packages, using about $12 of our Oddball Fund. ("Rainbow Joy" to Spikey, and "Racecar Alley" to stagebear.)

The package from gmmarton came in, with SIX more circular needles for us! (So far, gmmarton has provided a total of 18 circular needles for the Oddball projects!) :woohoo:
She also included some money for postage. You're an angel, my friend!

Here are the six new needles, arranged on top of our Oddball Blanket #1.

We have $65 still available.

I have some MORE good news, as well. Today, I received THREE BOXES of yarn from Debkcs for my charity knitting!
:cheering: :woohoo: :cheering:

I've already made a spreadsheet of the yarn, making plans on how it will be used.

Just wanted to let everyone know that our postage funds are almost depleted.

There is $29 left in our fund, and I will be mailing some packages out this week, including one to England. So I have a feeling that our money is going to be out within the next two weeks.

Also, our Canadian Oddball Baby Blanket knitters have requested if we can help them out a little as well. I am planning on sending an international money order to them this month. But, right now, I don't really have anything to send to them. :pout:

So, if anyone wants to help pay for postage for our Oddball projects, you can go to our blog, and click the paypal button to send a Paypal donation. http://blanketfinder.blogspot.com/ (scroll down the page, and you'll see it on the right hand side.)

If you prefer to help another way, just send me a message, and we'll work it out.
Thank you very much! :muah:

I did receive some more money for our postage! :)

So far, since I first asked for help several months ago, I have received $350 in donations.
I have used $327 for postage.

We now have $23 dollars available. Getting slim!

I used $25 dollars tonight to mail 4 packages. I wonder how much postage will be when the rate increase goes into effect? :help:

Thank you to all of the wonderful KHers who have donated knitting needles, yarn, journals, point protectors, and postage funds. I couldn't have done all of our Oddball projects and mailings without your help!

Thank you for your help! :muah:

Just in time, too. I'm mailing packages to England and Canada this week.

Wow! Believe it or not, our funds are gone again!
That was FAST!!!

But, I don't want you to send any money. Here's what I want.

Please tell others about our project, and tell them about our main website. http://blanketfinder.blogspot.com/
(There are links to all our Oddball projects on that page)

There is a Paypal donation button on every one of our blogs.

Hopefully, we will get a few donations from people that are not knitting with us. I think we are doing quite enough of the work ourselves. I'll see if I can drum up some donations as well.

Thank you all very much for your help! :muah:
