Just wondering. Seems like I need to frog it and use a different rib.

?

I've done a hat with that to start...no problems. But I guess it depends on your hat and your gauge.

Try making the ribbing with a smaller needle (go down one size)than the body of the hat. This will make the ribbing tighter.

Or maybe try a K2P1 rib?

For me, generally, if the rest of the hat is in stockinette I might do a 1x1 or start the first 2 or 3 rows in a 1x1, switch to 2x2 for about an inch, and then resume in stockinette or 1x1 for the rest of the hat.

The few rows of 1x1 after casting on and joining (I'm assuming it's in the round, probly cuz that's how I knit hats) will help it from flaying out and looking like a bell instead of a hat.

Or rib with needles two sizes down from the rest of your work to get it tighter.

Hi

I use 2 x 2 rib if I'm knitting hats for babies and toddlers.

Nursing staff in neo-natal units prefer this kind of rib because it stretches so easily.

If you want a tighter rib, go for 1 x 1.

needle for the ribbing. Oh well. It was mindless (pleasant) stockinette st. last night, kept me in a trance.

I just started my first hat, and the pattern indicates that the K2P2 ribbing is to be done with needles two sizes smaller than the needle size to be used for the crown.

Sure would have been nice if my pattern had mentioned that. I think I'm going to frog mine.

OH well.

All but one of the hats I posted on this thread were knitted totally in K2 P2 rib http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73543&highlight=FO+hats

I have one that uses the same needles, but just increases the stitches on the first row by 2 once the stockinette starts.

I am doing a hat right now for a child and it is a 2 x 2 rib for a few rows then switch to stockinette. Hope you get it worked out.

I agree with using a smaller needle for the ribbing. Go down 1 or 2 sizes and it makes a huge difference!
