Here is the blog for the Preemie Blanket KAL
http://preemieoddballkal.blogspot.com/

One of our knitters (kellyh57) for the Oddball Baby Blankets has suggested that it would be nice if we made some smaller size baby blankets, using sportweight baby yarn, and size 5 or 6 knitting needles.

We like this idea, so we're gonna do it! If you want to join, just reply to this thread, or send a private message to Shandeh. :)

The blankets will be given to a children's hospital in North Carolina. :)

All the blankets will be made with 100% acrylic, soft sportweight (DK) yarn (washable).

The blankets are started by casting on 80 - 100 stitches with a size US 5 or 6 knitting needle. The first knitter will knit 3 to 6 rows, then continue knitting with the design of their choice for 4 inches (keeping 3 knit stitches at the beginning and end of each row). Then the project will be mailed to the next knitter. There will be 5 knitters for each blanket, so the blanket should measure about 20 inches long when complete.

(Detailed instructions for starting an Oddball Preemie Blanket are posted here: http://www.knittinghelp.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79558)

Let's stick to basic stitch designs for this project, with no holes in the blankets. We don't want tiny fingers to get stuck in the blankets! So, just knit and purl stitches. No yarn-overs, slipped stitches or cables.

Here are some good stitch designs to use for the blankets:
(Remember to knit the first 3 rows of the blanket, and knit 3 stitches at the beginning and end of each row. Each blanket will end with 3 rows of knit stitches as well.)
Basketweave (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/basket.htm) - cast on 99 stitches
Basketweave II (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/basketweave3.htm) - cast on 96 stitches
Box Stitch (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/boxst.htm) - cast on 100 stitches
Checks and Ridges (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/checksridges.htm) - cast on 100 stitches
Chevron (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/chevron.htm) - cast on 103 stitches
Close Checks (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/closechecks.htm) - cast on 96 stitches
Diagonals (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/diagonals.htm) - cast on 100 stitches
Diamond Pattern (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/diamond.htm) - cast on 97 stitches
Double Basketweave (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/doublebasketweave.htm) - cast on 101 stitches
Embossed Diamonds (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/embossed.htm) - cast on 99 stitches
Garter Stitch Steps (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/garterststeps.htm) - cast on 102 stitches
King Charles Brocade (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/king.htm) - cast on 102 stitches
Large Diamonds (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/largediamonds.htm) - cast on 96 stitches
Little Pyramids (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/littlepyramids.htm) - cast on 101 stitches
Moss Panels (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/mosspanels.htm) - cast on 101 stitches
Moss Stitch Parallelograms (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/mossparallelograms.htm) - cast on 96 stitches
Pique Triangles (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/piquetriangles.htm) - cast on 101 stitches
Plain Diamonds (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/plaindiamonds.htm) - cast on 96 stitches
Purled Ladder (http://www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches/purledladder.htm) - cast on 100 stitches

Shandeh,

Please sign me up, but put me nearer the end of the first blanket. I'll be done with school by the end of the month, but I have a really hectic four weeks ahead of me.

Thank you! :muah:

I've been doing projects like this for so long, that I already had the framework in my head. I just had to fine-tune it for this project. :)

Thanks for joining your project! :teehee:

Sounds like a good idea. I can make simple buttons, but nothing as spectacular as our current "Oddball Baby Blanket" button. I wish I could remember who made that one for us.

Do you have a Flickr or Photobucket account?

If so, here's what you need to do.

Right-click on Shandeh's icon. Save it to your desktop. Then, go into either Flickr or Photobucket and upload it.

From there, make sure you select the correct size (thumbnail or small works well). Click on the URL associated with the correct size.

Go into User Settings and edit your signature. You can click the little picture thingy in the tool bar and paste the link that you just copied. It should plug the picture right in. Click save from there.

By the way, I just wanted to say that this is so cool to be a part of. I love all of these charity projects and I really look forward to seeing them grow with each knitter. It's so much fun to work on and a great break from my regular projects.

My family now checks in with me to see which one I'm getting next to work on. I love doing my own thing for charity projects too but this is so much fun to be part of an international group of charity knitters!

Ok - back to the regular knitting stuff . . .

It's not too hard. Just look for a sportweight or DK acrylic yarn. It doesn't have to be baby yarn. Just make sure it's soft.

"Rennagayle, are you ready for it to come to your house?"

Why, yes I am! :happydance:

Sandy, I only discovered this thread last week, but is there a blog with instructions on the preemie blankets the way there is with the Oddgball #2 (which I'm waiting on), or will the instructions be with the blanket when I receive it? :)

I'm so glad you're ready! As Doodknitwit says, just go to the first page of this discussion, and you'll see the instructions there. I haven't made a blog for our preemie blankets yet.

Doodknitwit started this blanket as a favor to me, since I'm starting so many right now. I usually start a little journal with each blanket, so we can each write a few thoughts for the child to see when they receive it. You can do that if you want....it makes the blanket a bit more special.

You can use any design you want, just avoid yarn-overs. We don't want tiny fingers getting caught in our blanket! Also, be sure to do 3 knit stitches at the beginning and end of each row.

Each knitter knits for 4 inches, then sends the blanket to the next knitter.

I'll send your address to Doodknitwit right now. :)

You guys are cracking me up. I used to be able to type on the computer or knit when I nursed him, but now he thinks that my computer is great to kick and knitting is one of his favorite toys... little stinker... oh how much I love him!

I do love nursing my babies too. I know I will miss it...

I just completed the beginning of the "Citrus Punch" blanket!

I used Baby Bee "Sweet Delights Baby" yarn in a bright orange color, called "Carrots! Oh No!" :teehee:

The design is "Windmills" - a free pattern on the internet. Can you see the windmills? You have to look at the triangles, and imagine a center post for 4 of them....then you'll see it. :)

Thanks for joining!

I have an opening on two blankets - "Racecar Alley" and "Angel Kisses". Your pastel yarn would work well for the Angel Kisses, so I'll put you on that list.

I apologize for not posting sooner to let Doodleknitwit know, but I received the Angel Kisses blanket this week. I'm taking it and the Oddball no.2 blanket, which I also received this week, along with me to my knitting group tonight.

One of these days, I'll take the time to learn how to post a picture on here. I do not learn new things easily, especially if they're computer related.:wall: I don't have a flicker or photobucket account, but I do use Picasa to house pictures for my blog. I need to find out if I can also use it for posting pictures here. :??

auburnchick

Renna,

You should be able to use the link for your pictures in Picasa here. What you do is copy the link, then come here, into a message, and click on the little picture button up in the toolbar (beside the paperclip with red X through it). When you click on the picture button, a window pops up, where you can paste the link inside. Then click okay. Voila. Your picture is inserted.

Okay, I'm hanging my ignorance out for all to see...., but, what link? For instance, when I want to put a picture into my blog, I open the Picasa program on my computer, click onto the pic I want in my blog (which sends it to a holding tray at the bottom), then I click the "Blog This" button and voila', the pictures go to my blog. I don't have a link per se, though. :??

You'll see the button when you post a message, but it won't work if you only use the "reply" button on a message.

Here's what you have to do.....

Click "Post Reply" at the bottom left of the page.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3092/2298184823_19404563eb_m.jpg

You will get a webpage that looks like this:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3062/2298980438_a7ceca4af2.jpg

Click the button on the right that looks like a little mountain.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3185/2298184869_4a3a771272.jpg

And you will get a little pop-up window that looks like this:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3149/2298980478_3cc76412cd.jpg

Just enter the link to your photo there, and it should work.

For whatever reason (me doing something wrong, I'm sure :?? ), I couldn't get it to work that way. I did, however, discover some buttons at the bottom of the "edit signature" area that I hadn't noticed before. (option 1 and option 2). I chose one of those and was able to successfully upload the picture from my computer files. :shifty:

PS-Thank you, ladies, for your help! :-)

auburnchick

Ok. I created a Picasa album for myself so I could learn.

Bring up the picture on the screen and look for "Link to This Photo" on the right of the screen:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3125/2298347489_56f2d6a556.jpg

Now, click on that, and some options open up below (compare the shot below with the one above).

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3205/2299143356_b47200c5d6.jpg

Now, what you'll want to do is select your size first. Click on the arrow beside Thumbnail. I usually select medium. It fits nicely on KH that way.

Then, click in the box that says paste link in email or IM. Then, you can RIGHT-CLICK (click the right button on your mouse), and select copy.

Now, go to the KH site, into a new message, and click on the little box that Shandeh pointed out in her picture. When you have the window open, click the right mouse button again, and select PASTE. Then click Ok.

Wanna know something...I just tested my instructions, and they don't seem to work. They should, but they don't. Must be a glitch with Picasa.

Here's the easy way.

With you picture on the screen, right-click on the picture, and select copy. Come over to this window (KH), open a new message, and right-click, and select paste.

Hope this works.

I have heard from several of you, and now have a list of knitters started for each blanket:

"Easter Bonnet" will be started by stagebear. We need 4 more knitters for that one.

"Forest Greens" also needs 3 knitters.

"Ocean Blues" has room for 2 more knitters.

Our "Ocean Blues" blanket is a HIT! It is full of knitters now.

I still need two more knitters for "Easter Bonnet", and three more knitters for "Pink Princess" and "Forest Greens".

By the way, I finished the beginning of "Racecar Alley"! :cheering:
I had to use some sportweight yarn that was not as soft as normal, so that I could make some cool racing stripes!

I'll send some of this yarn along with the blanket, so the other knitters can add stripes to accent the blanket throughout.

What do you think about Bernat Baby Coordinates? I have some in "Lemon" yellow that I think will work on the Citrus Punch. It's washable, DK weight but not 100% acrylic (has some nylon in it). It's kinda floofy. I don't know how to describe it ;) I found some Baby Bee at HL that I liked, but it said bulky weight. I honestly could not tell the difference between that and the other stuff that was listed as sport or DK. I think it was mis-labeled or something. I can go back and get it if you guys don't think the Baby Coordinates will work.

Have finished my part of the Spring Flowers and are ready to send to Pauline on Monday. Here is a picture:

If the same people are knitting on the Spring Flowers as the Purple Passion It might be an idea to keep them together as it would save on postage especially when they are sent to the US. What do everybody else think?

I've been toying with the idea of starting a blanket myself. I was thinking of an all white one, calling it Cloud Nine (or something related to a cloud. I thought about White Cloud, but that's a toilet paper brand.) What do you think? We, of course, will all use different patterns and yarn, but the white would really stick out and be super pretty. What do you think? I have the needles and can pick up a journal. (Shandeh mentioned starting our own in the other thread so I thought I'd propose my idea here.)

I'm delivering blankets in the morning. I have been speaking w/ several of the volunteers, and they are excited and can't wait for them.

HOWEVER, today I spoke w/ the supervisor of the volunteer department, and she cautioned me on one thing. The little books we all have filled out won't be going w/ the blankets. This is the reason. Many of their patients are terminal. Receiving a booklet saying wishing you well, etc, causes some hurt and depressions. So.. knowing we would do anything to prevent that, I won't be sending the books.

She understood our reasoning, and appreciated it, but their thoughts are for their patients first. I had never thought of the patients thinking negative, and I feel bad for never thinking of this first.

So, they are excited about the blankets, and look forward to receiving them now and in the future. The hospital is appreciative and is very thankful.

I'll post pictures after I deliver them.

Hugs and have a Hoppy Easter!

03-22-2008, 08:13 AM
That's a good idea, Nathalie. Perhaps we could just have a small note card that goes with each blanket that we all sign.

I suggest that the journals all go to Sandy, as a treasure for her to keep for coordinating these wonderful projects!

Photos are coming.. fighting with camera to send them to computer. (Don't ask who is winning)

Long story short, sorry it's been a few days, but here is what happened.

I cried, even before I got here, lol. They are so appreciative of everything and anything. They welcomed them and look forward to any and all we send.
I couldn't get a pic of a child w/ blanket due to lots of rules & regs, & privacy which I know we all respect.

The hospital was so gracious, and thankful I cried like a baby. The fact that some of the children come in with nothing from car wrecks, broken homes, abuse, etc shook me to the core.

These blankets will give love and comfort to those that needed them most. The hospital is so totally devoted to these kids, and they truly care about the kids. They are so overwhelmed with kids needing help whose parents can't afford due to the economy. It broke my heart to hear some of the stories.

Believe me when I came home I grabbed a couple of skiens and knitted during the birthday parties. I can't believe the impact something as simple as a blanket will make to some of these kids.

Hopefully I'll win the fight from camera to computer showing the volunteers receiving the blankets. They really give their all. It just made me more determined to knit faster for these kids. They send the blankets on helicopters, surgery, everywere. The kids can become attached and keep them with them.
I know this message is scattered, but I'm going on about 5 hrs sleep since Saturday night.

Thanks to all who have & is participating in this wonderful cause.

Big bear Hugs to all

Talk to you all more soon, I'm taking a sleeping pill and crashing..

About Cherry Blossoms: I'm sure that whatever you choose will be beautiful, suziehomemaker. (I think that white would be nice also.)

I went to AC Moore on my lunch break and found the Bernat Softee Baby and I think it's the same color (white and pink mixed) as someone used before. It's very pretty and should look nice!

I've started on "Cloud Nine" but I'm just not happy with it :( I'm using size 6 needles and Lion's Baby Soft. The stitch pattern is called "Rose Hip" or something like that. It's got a bunch of slipped stitches in it. It's only about 20/21 inches wide. Is that too narrow? I'm getting tired of the pattern so I'm debating on frogging it and starting over if you think it's too narrow. If not, I'll finish it up and send it on. What do you guys think?
