I'm sure most of you are now all aware of the school shooting at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb Illinois. I would like to make blankets for the victims families. I am collecting squares--knit or crochet!!! The colors are black, red, and white. The mascot is a husky. After they are finished they will be sent to the school and given out. Please email me or PM me. Contact me to get the mailing address. The NIU Foundation is helping with the cost of shipping them to the families. We need enough squares for 5 families!!!We can do this!!!
Thanks
Kelly Carr
Please make them with soft yarn - something washable like Encore or redheart- and make them 8x8 squares.
The deadline for the squares is August 1.
I Challenge everyone to make 1 square a week....we need 5 blankets!!!!!!
I know we can do this!!!!!!!!!11

Kelly, I'm in...as soon as my classes are over in two weeks.

Can you lay out some more definitive plans...perhaps a date you would like squares in by? I know this is still in the beginning phases, but that kind of info might be good to have.

I would like to do this. I have lion jiffy in black, I can make a few squares out of that. Hopefully I can get a washable yarn in red or white too. I'm going to tell my friend to see if she would like to also.

I made a black square a garter stitch boarder with stocking stitch, working or another in red-cabled. Both are soft acrylic.

Have you tried posting this in other places like Ravelry , a local knitting group,LYS , or even your local Freecycle?
I will be happy to knit a few and send them to you but it seems as if you might need more help.
Exactly how many do you need? Knowing that you have x of the total number might get people motivated to help.
I'll send you a PM when I am done with my squares to get the address. Good luck with recruiting!!

I've made 3 also. I about 6 inches into my 4th.

Kelly, love the squares so far. There were five families we are making blankets for, right? I am designing 3 designs, one in each color and should have them to you by July.

I'm on square # 8 I think. These are a bit like chips can't knit just one!

Kelly are you getting more of one color than another? I need to go yarn shopping and can get what ever color you need.

Oh booger! I made up 5 squares from the red and white yarn I had
left over from other projects but somehow I thought it was supposed
to be 9 inch squares. Mine are too big! Anyone know of a blanket
charity that is using 9 inch squares?

Libbie

heatherg23
05-25-2008, 12:51 PM
Hi,

There is a charity that uses 9 inch by 6 inch. I don't know if you have those dimensions but if they are that size you can see my signature. There's a link to them.

Heather

gargoylelib
05-26-2008, 02:20 AM
No, these are 9 by 9 inch squares so won't work for the
rectangle blanket charity either. I guess I'll post a message
in the charity forum and see if anyone can use them. I feel
like such a dunce!

I have gotten a few more but not close enough to finish the project by August. This weekend I am going to go out and recruit!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am thinking about extending the deadline one more time for December to have them ready for the one year anniversary of the shooting. I would like everyones opinions.

heatherg23
06-24-2008, 12:28 PM
I only have 6 but i'm gonna go into overdrive. i can easily do 1-2 a day.

I like the idea of the 1 year anniversary. It might have a more impact because It gives them a positive note on a negative day.

I'm still planning to make at least a couple.....maybe we can really PUSH to get one or 2 blankets for the Aug/Sept (?) deadline & then more in Dec?
Have you posted anything on Ravelry or Craftster?
Just a thought....

I would like to include letters with the blankets…if you would like to send some with you squares that would be fine. You could also email me and I will print all of the letters and put a them in some type of binder to be sent with each blanket. I will make six copies of each and make six binders. I think this would be great to include with the blankets!!
Again THANKS for all the help and support with the project….
well off to knit!!

I just wanted to thank everyone and give an update. We have enough squares plus some to finish the blankets. I have 3 to go!!! Should be done by next week...(I am a SLOW seamer).
I also have some great news. A news station in Rockford wants to do an interview. She is covering all the events leading up to the 1 year anniversary of the shooting. It will be a phone interview but I am emailing her pics of the blankets. Everyone will see what a wonderful job you all have done and how loving you all are.
Thanks again for all the hard work. I will try to keep everyone updated.
THANKS!!!
