Ok, We're going to see my Mother-in-Law at the end of May. I've only been face to face with her twice in 8 years so I'm still in that 'oh my god I hope she like me' phase :P I want to knit something to give to her while I'm there but I have no clue what to make. I thought a shawl might be nice, hubby said she's always chilly, but I've never made a real shawl. I made a little rectangle wrap thing but nothing beautiful. Do any of you have an suggestions for a pattern I could try out? I'm pretty fearless with trying new things, I just don't know where to start looking and I'm a bit nervous about this particular project.

Try clapotis (http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATTclapotis.html) from knitty .... easy, scarf/wrap convertible, easily adjusted for length and width.

Does she live in a cold place? I love the clapotis but I also love the candle and flame pattern. Will she view a shawl as you saying she is "old"? How about a felted bag?

This is a pattern I found on the KH forum. It looks relatively simple, but elegant.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I don't have to make a shawl, it just that I need to make something that doesn't require a specific size, because I don't know any of her measurments and I want it to be a surprise. I didn't think of a bag . . . hmmmm my one attempt at felting didn't go so well though

You might knit her a throw to drape over the back of her couch.

How about This shawl http://mimknits.com/shop/index.php?main_page=document_product_info&products_id=199 I have started it and it seems to knit up quite quick. There are a ton of other shawls patterns on the same web site some free some you have to buy. have a good look and see if any thing takes your fancy. good luck.
