Hey y'all! Some of you know that my family flew to Las Vegas for a soccer thing. While there (we're actually flying out tonight), I had to investigate the yarn shops. Keep in mind that I live in a city that does not have any "real" yarn stores, so this is a BIG deal!

To make this easier, I copied some stuff from my blog...

Warning: The following pictures are not for the faint of heart.

But first...pictures of my trip there. Look at the car we rented! I like this car! I felt sporty, like a hot young mama (one can have their delusions...it is Vegas, after all!).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2072/2334458057_28c3375df1_m.jpg

Here's the view I had as I drove:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2117/2335283314_d1076ba9a5_m.jpg

I was thrilled to find two good Christian radio channels. I was singing, enjoying the scenery, and anticipating what was to come. Would my expectations be met???

Here's the first store I went to -- Gail Knits (http://gailknits.com/).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2206/2334587833_48b87a0962_m.jpg

What a fabulous store!!! The outside is very deceptive. Here's what I saw when I entered...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2285/2335283400_843ff2b86b_m.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2225/2334455205_1e7cefc73c_m.jpg

I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! I felt like a two-year old at Disney World! A gal came up and asked if she could help me. I could barely talk, blubbering like some crazy lady. I slowed down and calmly explained that I was AuburnChick from Podunk, U.S.A., and that I had never seen such a marvelous array of yarn before! She invited me to pet the yarn. I did the mad dash. However, she tried to explain all about how some of the yarns were spun, etc.

"Lady," I wanted to say, "Let me be...not enough time and so much to see." But I didn't. I politely listened until she saw the glazed look in my eyes and wandered off, allowing me the freedom to wander. What a marvelous, stupendous place! I saw yarns I'd only seen online. Cascade, Tofutsies, Rowan...I could go on and on...

Now, here's where the practical side of me came out. If I'm going to buy yarn, I must know what I'm going to make. So undecided...I finally called over another lady, who wound up being the owner. She chuckled at my enthusiasm and patiently answered all of my questions. I'm sure I must have sounded and acted like the country bumpkin I am.

So, on to the good stuff. Here's what I had in my bag when I left.

Bamboo!!! Oh my! I've heard about the stuff but have never touched it! It is some of the softest stuff I've ever had the privilege of touching.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/2334470977_0c8f5f667f_m.jpg

I'm going to make the Bamboo Lacy Jacket (http://www.gailknits.com/in_house_designs/gallery/pages/bamboolacy_jacket.htm). It's an in-house pattern.

This is some Cascade yarn. It's green. The picture does not do it justice. I'm going to make a beret to match the fingerless gloves in my queue.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2022/2335296724_b01746b30b_m.jpg

This is more Cascade yarn. Sorry I can't be more specific on the color, but I was on the soccer field as I typed this. I think I'm going to make a hat out of this as well.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2151/2334460133_234572104f_m.jpg

Here are a couple of skeins of Tofutsies.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2195/2335288150_5bc3b02cbc_m.jpg

A funny story...I was eyeing the bamboo and the three skeins of Tofutsies on the shelves. There wasn't enough of the bamboo for the project, so I was debating whether or not to purchase it. Plus, Gail didn't have a color of Tofutsies that I liked. However, I stayed so long that she got in a delivery. You guessed it...more bamboo and Tofutsies yarn. I heard God speak..."Nathalie, this yarn was meant for you..." :D

So, I walked out of the store quite a bit poorer but floating on air. What a great start to the day! But the day was only just beginning...

I headed back to my hotel, but I realized that I still had plenty of time before I had to go the soccer fields. Mustn't let an opportunity like this go to waste. I punched the address to Wooly Wonders into the GPS.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2250/2334457915_d60475df2e_m.jpg

What a find! The yarn selection was not as big as Gail Knits, but it was a cozy place with the nicest gals!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3174/2335285808_ca19b687f2_m.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2339/2334457257_9af21e4c2b_m.jpg

Here's what I bought at this store...

Noro, for a friend. I'm going to make her a booga bag.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3065/2334465437_4f97059183_m.jpg

I can't remember the name of this yarn, but it's just gorgeous! It's deep blue with a hint of purple in it. I'm going to make a shawl/wrap thing from a lace book I purchased at the store.

Here's some reading material for the plane ride home.

Wow! You lucky duck. I am VERY jealous. Also, I just got my first skein of Tofusties too and it's that same pink, yellow and orange colourway. I think it was made for me, because I absolutely LOVE that colourway. It must have called out to you too. I'm making the Monkey socks with it- turning out gorgeous, just in case you want to make them too!

Looks like you are having a fantastic time and pardon the pun, but you truly DID hit the jackpot by finding some cool yarn places out there. Will you be buying another suitcase to bring it all home in??? :teehee:

:roflhard:

Half of my suitcase is filled with yarn! My kids didn't understand why my suitcase and laptop bag were so heavy. :teehee:

Knitgal, thanks for the tip about the Monkey Sock pattern. This is one that I've ogled for a while. It's good to know that someone has used this yarn for that pattern.

Yes, it's official. I have a stash now. As I was buying the yarn at the second yarn store, I was telling the ladies how this should set me for the next year. They laughed that "knowing laugh" and said, "Yeah, right." :roflhard:

I'm glad y'all liked the pictures. I can't wait to retrieve my luggage from baggage claim (I'm at the airport waiting for my connecting flight). Having all of that yarn out of my hands is making me nervous. :teehee:

Darn girl, did you win a jackpot in Vegas? What a sweet stash. We go to Vegas once a year and I have never checked out the yarn shops!:wall: We aren't going this year because I am having surgery the end of April, but our trip for next year I will certainly have to check them out. Hope you had fun. I adore Vegas and always look forward to going back.

Y'all are making me smile with your warm comments. Jet lag stinks (especially after riding the red-eye), so it was nice to log on and see all of the good feedback. Because I'm kind of a yarn newbie, I wasn't sure. I went by how the yarn felt...that was the deciding factor for me.

As far as winning the jackpot, boy did I need to in order to pay for this stuff!!!!

I did win $85 on one slot machine. I cashed out at that point. Dh asked if I was going to give him his $20 back (my play money). Nope, I said. Gotta pay for the yarn I just bought.

Uh oh...this is probably too late, but here are links to the stores:

Gail Knits (http://gailknits.com/)

Wooly Wonders (http://www.woolywonders.com/)

Gail Knits was the first store pictured...the big one. Wooly Wonders was nice and cozy.

Just call both places, and they'll be more than happy to give you directions from your hotel! They were easy to get to, and I drove at least 20 minutes to get there...all by myself.
