Does anyone have a good pattern for a fitted stylish/contemporary top/sweater? I keep running into either explicitly maternity tops or tops resembling maternity tops. I was something fun that I can actually wear as a college student.

I definitely understand. I am 22 and I have trouble finding patterns that I like. I LOVE the patterns by the Zephyr girls found here. (http://www.zephyrstyle.com/patterns.html) I am currently working on their pattern called Ms. Marigold and it's easy to knit and it looks adorable (I omitted the ruffle).
I also love the patterns from the book "Fitted Knits" by Stephanie Japel. There are some pictures on Ravelry of the designs, but you can also look at a few here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/customer-images/1581808720/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0?ie=UTF8&index=0#gallery). Interweave Knits magazine often has some pretty tops as well as Knitty (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring08/index.html).
Generally, I have had to do a lot of looking, but I have found a few cute patterns. I am very picky about my clothes, so I don't want to waste my time making something I won't wear.
If you're not on Ravelry yet, you should sign up. It's an amazing resource for finding patterns. There are groups of knitter's in their 20's and I raid their patterns too.

Stitch Diva Studios has some nice fitted sweaters. Sahara is going to be my next project, and I've also been thinking about the Hourglass Jacket and the Simple Knitted Bodice.

You might look into the book Fitted Knits (http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/1581808720/105-5913211-9480437?SubscriptionId=1YZR91QYB6WCG3PM78G2). They may have it at your library, too.

This one's cute, but costs a few dollars.

Patternworks has two booklets out with some gorgeous tops, young woman style called "Make it Modern" and "Terra Collection".

I have a slew of them bookmarked to knit for myself. (I'm 23.) I'll just post links. I know it's lot. Hope you find something you like!
