I want to do this pattern -- http://www.ullaneule.net/0306/ohjeet_fifi3.html . :?? However the pattern is in Finnish and I have never done a chart. SO..... Can anyone explain the chart or translate from Finnish????

Please?!?!?!?!? :flirt:

I can do part of the chart and guess at the rest... The white squares are knit on RS, purl on WS, I think the gray ones are just `no st' - there to keep the chart square because there's no st on that row, but there will be in that place on later rows because of the incs. O is YO, / is a right slant dec - k2tog, \ is a left slant dec - ssk/skp, ^ is a double dec, either sl2, k1, psso or sl 1, k2tog, psso, the * might be your selvedge sts, maybe in garter st and | I'm not sure, but could be the center st and when you get to it, you mirror the second half of the row.

I can translate the symbols well enough, but when it comes to following a chart I have to write it out in text.

Here is a basic translation of the Finnish instructions...there might
be errors as I'm not fluent so be forewarned :)

CO 3 Sts.
Row 1: Knit across.
Row 2: Holding a double strand of yarn, K1, yo, K1, yo, K1 = 5 Sts.
The doubled yarn for row 2 is so that this beginning edge will look
more matched with the garter st edging on the rest of the wrap. The
doubled yarn makes the sts look a bit thicker.

Row 3: Continue with a single strand, K5.
Row 4: Start chart 1, Row 1.

On the wrong side you will always K2, purl to the last 2 sts, K2.
Wrong side rows are not marked on the chart.

When you have finished chart 1, move on to chart 2. Repeat
chart 2 until wrap is the desired size. Knit chart 3 once.
Cast off on the wrong side. (Can't quite translate the cast off
instructions...but if I have to guess from what I do understand,
you will purl 1, *purl 1, move stitches back to left needle and purl
2 together, leave resulting st on right needle. Repeat from * across.)

Special Chart Instructions:
Charts are read from right to left. Chart 1 represents the whole
width of the wrap. Charts 2 and 3 represent only half. Knit the
right side as shown to the middle point and then knit the left
side as a mirror image.

Chart Key:
White square: Knit on right side, purl on wrong side
Grey square: No stitch
|: middle stitch (knit on right side, purl on wrong side)
*: edge stitch (always knit)
O: yarn over
\: k1, slip 1, psso
/: k2 together
^: slip 1, k2tog, psso
@: k1, yo, k1 all in the same st. 1 st becomes 3.

Hope that helps you some!
Libbie :)

You can also check with Ravelry groups. There's a gruop called Polyglots and they are always willing to help with patterns in different languages

You are all SO helpful!

gargoylelib -- that is great. Now when I figure out the chart thing I have got the "Fifi III" in the bag.

I have decided to try a pattern that is 1) in English 2) has a chart with the pattern written with it and 3) then try the Finnish one with ONLY the chart to go by.

Suzeeq thank you for all of your suggestions and getting me started translating this mysterious language of "chart"

Jints-- thank you for the tutorials, that is where I am headed right now to figure this out. I am so excited to do something that will turn out looking dramatic and cool!!!!

Knittinnat -- good information about the Ravelry group. I didn't even think of looking there for Finnish help! Duh!

Thanks again everyone!!
