i am working on pattern that doesn't explain much, and i figured (after month of knitting and unravelling same part) that the second yo in "k3, yo, k1, yo, k3" is yo as in right side. How do i do this and how is that different from "k3, yo, k2, yo, k3"?

A 'yo' between K sts is simply bringing the yarn fwd and then working the next st. So, K3, yfwd, K1, yfwd, K3. It'll create an add'l st (*) between the K3*K1*K3.

I see the photo of finished pattern and it's supposed to be synmetric, but k3, yo k1 yo k3 = st, st, st, (hole, st,)st, (hole, st) st,st,st = 3 st on one side and 4 st on the other sandwiching the lace in the middle. I'm so confused!

The symmetry may be achieved when you've worked a few inches so the pattern is obvious. Sometimes the numbers are deceiving. Can you post a picture of your piece and perhaps the pattern for purposes of comparison?

Actually that is three knit stitches a hole a stitch a hole and three knit stitches. I think you are adding an extra stitch by interpreting the yo to mean make a stitch.

The yarn overs will be increase stitches and they will leave a hole. You would k3 do a yo k1 do a yo and k3 . You start with 7 stitches and end up with 9.

The pattern as you have it *is* symmetrical. The yo is simply the "hole", not a stitch on this row. So it should be:
VVVOVOVVV = st, st, st, (hole), st, (hole), st, st, st

i had been thinking k3 yo k1 yo k3 spans across 9 st, ending with 11 st! NO WONDER NOTHING MADE SENSE!!! i think i can go on restarting my daughter's spring cardigan now! better hurry before it gets too warm!!
