Ok, so I got the darn thing cast on (all 599 stitches....) and I got up to the point where I have to start following this chart, but I am confused as to whether to ssk or k2tog before and after the see-saw looking square because the legend does not show a \ it only shows a / for both the ssk and the k2tog....

that is what the finished shawl should look like....

here... they have done the SSK on the right and the K2tog on the left and the diamond points up.... in this pattern the diamond points down, so should I just reverse this and do the SSK on the left and the K2tog on the right... what would you do?

Yeah, that's odd.... must be a typo. The \ is a left leaning decrease and should be SSK. Try it that way.

thanks! I will try it that way... what's the worst that could happen? I have to frog it and start over?

It should tell you specifically because it will matter which way the stitch leans.
